About the Opportunity:

The Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) is one of six national mathematical sciences institutes predominantly funded by the National Science Foundation. Each year we bring together approximately 1,000 researchers from around the globe to collaborate on challenging topics within and around the computational domain. ICERM is a dynamic, active environment supported and managed by 14 full time professional staff and 9 directors. ICERM is one of several math institutes funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Launched at Brown University in 2010, the institute's funding has been renewed by the NSF through 2030. Prior to that date the institute will request renewal for another 5-year grant. This stable cycle of repeat funding in 5-year increments is the typical model for successful NSF-funded math institutes.

This position aids with reporting functions for the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) - a large research center primarily funded by the National Science Foundation.

Responsibilities

The Communications and Reporting Specialist for the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) manages communications to engage ICERM's many constituencies. Reporting to the Associate Director of Finance and Administration, the Specialist is a cross-platform content producer responsible for managing the institute's essential reporting processes, ensuring compliance, and accurately documenting project outcomes, particularly for NSF grants.

This role also oversees and executes scientific communications by developing and implementing communications and outreach that will effectively elevate the profile of ICERM and its programs to the mathematical community, ICERM's boards, and the broader Brown community. The Specialist works closely with program staff and principal investigators to gather data, analyze research outputs, and effectively communicate the impact of mathematical research.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 8/31/2030 which may be extended based upon available funding.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs, STEM, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in communications, marketing, public affairs, or grant writing.
  • Experience or education in STEM, research, or research administration preferred.
  • Preferred Background: Familiarity with mathematics and/or the research environment to facilitate the accurate translation of complex scientific concepts.

Job Competencies

  • Ability to translate scientific concepts into communications for a variety of audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and external sponsors.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong command of MLA, Chicago and/or AP editorial style.

  • Demonstrated strong presentation skills with special attention to detail, accuracy, and audience.

  • Knowledge of evolving social media platforms and best practices for engagement.

  • Sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters, particularly those involving personnel, funding, or research data.

  • Flexibility in adjusting to changing demands and priorities.
