Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Details

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is conducting a nationwide search for an accomplished academic pediatric emergency medicine physician to serve as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). The Division Chief will lead a growing and thriving program, overseeing a multidisciplinary team of 38 pediatric emergency medicine physicians, 17 general pediatricians, 9 fellows, and an active advanced practice provider team to provide high-quality, fiscally responsible care that serves a broad region across the Intermountain West.

The Division Chief will define and execute strategies to fulfill the division's mission of providing outstanding pediatric emergency healthcare, performing high-quality research, and training the next generation of PEM physicians and healthcare professionals. The Division Chief will also oversee all educational efforts of the division including a vibrant fellowship program that currently trains nine categorical fellows, and will ensure the highest quality in medical student, resident, fellow, and faculty education and training.

The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine serves patients at three clinical locations: Primary Children's Hospital Salt Lake Campus, Primary Children's Hospital Miller Campus in Lehi, Utah, and Urgent Care at Sugarhouse Health Center. Primary Children's Hospital Salt Lake Campus is a full-service, American College of Surgeons-certified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in the Intermountain West, providing tertiary care for children across a six-state region including Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and parts of Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. The emergency department has 35 beds, including four trauma bays, and an admission rate of 23%. The hospital's referral base for transport spans approximately 10% of the continental United States, making it one of the largest geographic referral areas in the country. Primary Children's Hospital Miller Campus Emergency Department has 19 beds and has seen rapid growth in patient visits within the first year of opening in February 2024. The Division Chief will work collaboratively with hospital leadership, trauma services, and life flight transport teams to ensure seamless care across services. They will also lead pediatricians working in the Rapid Treatment Units at both Salt Lake and Lehi locations, a short-stay unit for hospitalized children requiring brief admissions.

The ideal candidate will be board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, holding subspecialty certification through the American Board of Pediatrics or American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics. The successful candidate will be a distinguished academician in pediatric emergency medicine with demonstrated leadership skills in managing a dynamic and expanding division within a large academic pediatric department. Candidates must qualify for appointment as a Professor or Associate Professor in the Clinical or Tenure Track at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
