The Department of Molecular Biology is offering a postdoctoral scholarship in Medical Science with a focus on molecular mechanisms of MLL1-driven leukaemia. The scholarship is full-time studies for two years, beginning 1st of January 2027 or by agreement. Application deadline is 16th of November 2026.

Departmental specific information

The molecular epigenetics (Yuri Schwartz) lab, situated in the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, is a dynamic and stimulating multidisciplinary research environment focused on regulatory mechanisms that enable cells to retain their identity. We employ Drosophila and human cell culture models, genomics, genetics and numerical simulations to understand molecular mechanisms of epigenetic regulation by the Polycomb and Trithorax group proteins.

Project description

Chromosomal rearrangements of the human MLL1 gene are associated with de novo and therapy-induced paediatric and adult acute leukaemia, making them an unmet clinical need. Commonly, such rearrangements are balanced translocations that fuse MLL1 with another gene. Extensive studies of the last two decades revealed that MLL1 is a histone methyltransferase and that some of its oncogenic fusions are chromatin-associated proteins. However, molecular mechanisms linking MLL1 to oncogenic transformation remain unclear. Does MLL1, like its better-studied Drosophila ortholog, act by limiting epigenetic repression of developmental genes? Do oncogenic fusions perturb epigenetic repression of alternative gene expression programs? Is the MLL1 methyltransferase activity critical for its oncogenic function, and what are the relevant substrates? Addressing these questions is the main aim of the project.

Qualifications

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related fields at the time of recruitment qualifies as a postdoctoral fellow. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest when the decision on the scholarship recipient is made. Upon equal qualification, priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. Further, a candidate who has completed their degree more than three years before the closing date may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances.

Since the project will require interactions with international collaboration partners, very good communication skills, both oral and written, in English, are a must. Further, we expect the ability to interact in a team, high intrinsic motivation and that you can structure your research independently. You must have a very good working knowledge of standard molecular biology, recombinant DNA techniques and mammalian cell culture. It will be particularly qualifying to have demonstrated expertise in gene regulation, epigenetics or biochemistry. An ability to present your findings orally or in writing in a concise and accessible manner is a plus.

As part of our community, you contribute to fostering an inclusive culture and a positive work
environment. This involves communicating effectively across differences, demonstrating a collaborative spirit and the ability to work well with others. You maintain openness and a welcoming attitude, showing respect, compassion, and empathy. You engage with and support colleagues from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and promote a healthy work-life balance for both yourself and others.

Application

You apply via our system Varbi. The application must be received latest 16 November 2026. Your application must contain the following documents written in English or Swedish:

  • Cover letter (max. 1 page) clearly describing your research experience, motivation and how your expertise matches the requirements.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV, max. 2 pages) and publication list (max. 5 pages).
  • Verified copy of doctoral degree certificate or documentation that clarifies when the degree of doctor is expected to be obtained.
  • Contact information of three references.
