Clinical Research Fellow

Job description

The School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health is seeking to appoint two Clinical Research Fellows. You will contribute to therapy development research for angina and no obstructive coronary arteries (ANOCA) in women, led by Professor Colin Berry and funded by Wellcome Leap’s Visible Programme. This is a transformative international research initiative aiming to improve the diagnosis and treatment of women living with ANOCA. Women are disproportionately affected by coronary microvascular dysfunction and coronary vasospasm, yet these conditions remain under-recognised, resulting in delayed diagnosis, treatment uncertainty, and significant health inequalities.

This pioneering, patient-centred programme is co-designed with women who have lived experience of ANOCA and led by internationally recognised clinical researchers and trialists. The programme brings together three closely linked studies: ANOCA Diagnosis, which seeks to improve the identification and classification of disease mechanisms, ANOCA Therapy, an innovative clinical trials platform designed to evaluate and accelerate access to effective treatments, and ANOCA Exercise, which will evaluate resistance exercise as a lifestyle therapy option.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a once-in-a-generation effort to generate the evidence needed to transform clinical care, improve therapy options for women, and address longstanding sex-based disparities in cardiovascular health.

Job Purpose

This is a fixed term (3 years) Clinical Research Fellowship tenable in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health. It is expected that the Fellow will register for a higher degree and that the work will provide material sufficient to submit an MD or PhD.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for supporting recruitment to clinical studies and data collection.
  2. Supporting project management and study coordination in specified projects.
  3. Analysis of data for efficacy assessments e.g. the MRI scans, the ECGs, and coronary angiograms, as directed and supervised by the principal investigators.
  4. Enabling source data collection across sites.
  5. Work closely with the Chief Investigator to support communication to collaborators, stakeholders, including patients and their carers/relatives.
  6. Supporting trial management and compliance with Good Clinical Practice.
  7. Contribute to outputs of the trial including abstracts and scientific papers. The research activity and data collected will support a Higher Degree.
  8. Responsible for presenting at dissemination events including collaboration meetings and scientific symposia related to the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health.
  9. Support collaboration with other Wellcome Leap projects associated with this programme.
  10. Contribute to clinical cardiology research in the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital under the supervision of Professor Berry, as appropriate.
  11. You will be expected to register for a higher degree (e.g. MD or PhD) and the work is expected to contribute to the basis for submission of a higher degree. Training in relevant methodologies (e.g. Good Clinical Practice, MRI, ECG, quantitative coronary analyses) will be undertaken and certification maintained throughout the study.
  12. A contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the School may be required but will not form a major component of the post.
  13. You will support all necessary administrative activities associated with Professor Berry’s Projects. Any material generated can be presented at local, national or international meetings.
  14. As part of this project, this position will support clinical activities at the Clinical Research Facility at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the speciality of Cardiology and also at the outpatient clinic at Gartnavel General Hospital.
  15. You will support project coordination at the external sites participating in this project.
  16. You will be expected to submit grant application(s) as appropriate to the needs of the project.
