Associate or Full Professor of Music History and Literature

Job Summary

CIM invites applications for a Full or Associate Professor of Music History and Literature with a start date of Fall 2027.

In alignment with CIM’s mission, vision, institutional learning goals, and the career readiness objectives outlined in the Blueprint: 2030 strategic plan, this role requires an experienced and creative educator able to teach, envision and design coursework that will engage and educate students pursuing degrees ranging from the Bachelor of Music degree through the Doctor of Musical Arts degree. As a top tier conservatory, CIM attracts the world’s most talented classical music students to pursue performance focused degree programs, and faculty in the Musicianship Department play a key role in cultivating the broad-based knowledge, historical context, critical thinking and professionalism required to thrive as artistically literate 21st-century musicians. While CIM welcomes scholarly activity by classroom faculty; this position is a teaching focused role and ongoing scholarly research is not a primary requirement for this position. Additional responsibilities include the development, oversight and assessment of the comprehensive and qualifying exams taken by MM and DMA students along with service on the DMA committee which oversees the academic progress of the DMA cohort.

Review of materials begins October 26th and continues until filled. Applicants are requested to submit a cover letter, CV, and a list of 3-5 references. Additional supporting materials including syllabi and teaching samples will be requested at a later date.

This is a bargaining unit position covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between CIM and AFM Local 4. The hired individual must have sufficient prior experience to rank as an Associate Professor or Professor depending on qualifications. CIM and the hired individual will negotiate compensation and a personal contract, within the pay ranges of the CBA and subject to its terms and conditions of employment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach required and elective music history coursework at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Teach music literature coursework in one or multiple of the following areas dependent on candidate expertise and institutional needs: Song Literature, Chamber Literature and/or Symphonic Literature
  • Serve on the DMA committee and advising DMA Documents and Lecture Recital Documents as necessary
  • Design, administer and assess graduate diagnostic and qualifying exams in music history
  • Develop and implement music history and literature coursework based on the curricular needs of the institution.
  • Hold regular office hours and provide frequent, structured feedback to students
  • Work closely with the Head of Musicianship Studies and Office of Academic Affairs to ensure curricular alignment and compliance with institutional policies and guidelines
  • Mentor all students as they embark on varied career paths ranging from traditional performance, orchestral or teaching careers to multi-faceted portfolio careers informed by entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Communicate promptly, professionally, and effectively with students, families, faculty, and administration
  • Adhere to Faculty Duties and Expectations document and Employee Handbook

Education, Experience and Qualifications

A qualified candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in Musicology
  • 7-10 years of teaching Music History and Literature in a University or Conservatory environment
  • Documented evidence developing Music History and Literature coursework
  • A track record as a scholar with evidence of recognized contributions to the field
  • A broad musical and historical knowledge with the ability to draw compelling connections between performance and academic work
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively in a classroom environment with students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom speak English as a second language
  • Ability to take concrete steps to build a more inclusive future of classical music.

Personal Attributes

  • Self-motivated, curious and creative
  • Highly organized and reliable
  • Responsive and professional in communications with students and staff
  • Adaptable and responsive to the learning needs of a diverse student body
  • Collaborative mindset, open to curricular opportunities with colleagues across the Institute

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Music History and Literature Faculty are often expected to work outside of the classroom hours listed on their semester calendar. These hours outside of class time are typically devoted to planning upcoming lessons, grading assignments, advising and mentoring students, and serving the Institute.

As classroom teachers, Music History and Literature Faculty may need to stand for extended periods of time and move heavy objects (e.g., grand pianos), but these are not requirements for the position and can be addressed with the help of colleagues within the Institute.
