Living conditions and remarks

Living in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) means experiencing a remote island lifestyle centered heavily on close family ties, ocean environments, and a unique political partnership with the United States. Daily Life & Geography • Majuro Atoll: The capital island is home to roughly half of the country's population (~23,000 people), government offices, main schools, and the primary seaport. • Outer Islands: Life outside Majuro and Ebeye is much more traditional, slower-paced, and relies more on subsistence fishing and plant agriculture. • Transportation: Most people walk, ride local buses, or take salt-stained pickup trucks along the single narrow road that spans the atolls. Residency & Immigration Rules • U.S. Citizens (COFA): Under the Compact of Free Association (COFA), U.S. citizens can enter, live, and work in RMI without a visa. Marshallese citizens enjoy the same reciprocal right to live and work in the U.S. • Other Nationalities: Citizens from other countries require a visa and an Alien Residence Permit, usually tied directly to local employer sponsorship. There is n • Other Nationalities: Citizens from other countries require a visa and an Alien Residence Permit, usually tied directly to local employer sponsorship. There is no formal retirement or passive income visa. Healthcare & Infrastructure • Medical Facilities: There are two main hospitals—one in Majuro and one in Ebeye—supported by a network of outer-island health centers. Basic public healthcare requires a small $5 co-pay, though serious emergencies often require off-island medical evacuation to the U.S. [1, 2] • Utilities & Internet: Freshwater relies heavily on catchment and desalination, electricity access covers roughly 59 percent, and internet runs through a single underwater fiber-optic cable with limited satellite backup. [1] • Climate & Challenges: Residents deal with environmental vulnerabilities like rising sea levels, high-tide flooding, droughts, and storm erosion. Culture & Society • Social Bonds: Daily life is deeply communal, anchored by matrilineal land rights and shared family obligations. • Religion: The population is overwhelmingly Christian. Opinions on societal inclusivity vary, with some residents noting strong community warmth while others highlight cultural conservatism.
