Tenure-Track Position in Architecture: Climate-Responsive and Sustainable Architecture
The School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Architecture, with a focus on climate-responsive and sustainable architecture. The position is open at the assistant or associate professor level, depending on qualifications and experience. Applications for a visiting appointment will also be considered.
The successful candidate should hold a doctoral degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Science, Sustainable Design, or a closely related field, in addition to a professional degree in architecture or equivalent.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong record of design excellence and a body of scholarship that advances climate-responsive and sustainable architecture through design innovation, technical inquiry, and contextual knowledge. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainability that connects architectural design excellence with environmental performance, resource efficiency, material innovation, and the socio-ecological dimensions of the built environment.
Relevant areas of expertise may include passive design strategies, building physics, building-envelope performance, solar performance and daylighting, natural ventilation, thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, building energy systems, material ecologies, life-cycle assessment (LCA), climate adaptation, and environmental systems. Candidates whose work engages with climate justice, environmental ethics, and the social and ecological implications of architectural design in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Global South are particularly encouraged to apply.
Candidates should be able to apply and critically interpret appropriate analytical methods—including simulation, experimentation, measurement, quantitative assessment, and innovative approaches—and integrate them into architectural design, research, and teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to the design studio sequence and teach seminars related to their expertise, as well as courses coordinated with the core undergraduate building technology sequence.
The successful candidate will pursue an active research or creative program, seek external funding, and contribute to regional and international collaborations focused on ecological design and the environmental challenges facing the built environment. Experience in climate-vulnerable or resource-constrained contexts, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration across architecture, engineering, urban planning, environmental studies, or related fields, is highly valued. Recognition through awards, grants, exhibitions, or peer-reviewed publications is desirable.
Applications should include a cover letter describing the candidate's interest in the position and relevant experience; a complete curriculum vitae; a research statement (1–2 pages) outlining current and future research directions; a teaching statement (1–2 pages) addressing the candidate's approach to climate-responsive and sustainable design education; a research, design, or creative portfolio featuring relevant professional, academic, and/or student work, as appropriate; and the names and contact information of three references.
Applications should be sent by email to msfea@aub.edu.lb and addressed to the Dean of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the American University of Beirut.
Review of applications will resume on January 1, 2027, and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated starting date is September 1, 2027. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The American University of Beirut is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
