Research Fellow in Physical Layer Radio
The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.
We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.
Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.
The role
The University of Surrey has recently been awarded a three-year project by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The title of the project is Spectrally Efficient Low Cost Energy Efficient Communication for Transport using 3D Angular Modes (SELECT-3DAM). We are seeking a Research Fellow to join us for the remainder of the project (expected until March 2029) on a full-time basis.
This work builds on recent seminal work carried out by the project investigators on Linear Angular Momentum Multiplexing (LAMM). The project is an exciting opportunity to undertake work on antenna synthesis and physical layer radio to underpin the science to enable practical implementation of an evolution of this concept, 3D Angular Momentum Multiplexing (3DAMM), for advanced infrastructure to train communications.
Its application is to provide a low cost, energy efficient solution to deliver reliable gigabit connectivity to train carriages in tunnels. 3DAMM is a highly innovative wireless transmission architecture that has promise of revolutionising spectral efficiency in some wireless links.
We are looking to attract the brightest and best to form an effective team to develop and investigate the concept further. Together with another researcher appointed to the role focused on RF and antennas, this will include designing and constructing a concept demonstrator.
The postholder will undertake a range of research activities within a specified research area in infrastructure to train communications by means of 3D Angular Momentum Multiplexing, assuming responsibility for specific areas of projects and making use of new research techniques and methods, in consultation with the research award holder or supervisor. This will include computer-based simulations, library research, critical evaluation and interpretation as well as assisting other researchers with practical measurements.
About you
The post holder must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) or close to completing a PhD degree in Electronic Engineering, Mathematics or other areas related to synthesis of antenna arrays and/or modulation and coding. Postdoctoral research or industrial experience would be an advantage.
The post holder will have authority over some aspects of project work and must be capable of providing academic judgement, offering original and creative thoughts and be able to interpret and analyse results.
