About this role
We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Civil Engineering and Automation to contribute to and support the development of Teaching & Learning, Research, and Knowledge Exchange within the School of Engineering at UWE Bristol. This role is offered as a full-time (1.0 FTE) fixed-term appointment until 31 July 2027.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a candidate with a background in civil engineering and automation, robotics, and associated areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging, high-quality teaching in robotics and digital automation for civil engineering, covering areas such as programming and scripting for engineering applications, sensing, data acquisition and condition monitoring of infrastructure, and robotics and additive manufacturing in construction. Teaching responsibilities span undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, including supervision of UG and PG projects and group projects within the School of Engineering, with potential contributions to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.
A distinctive feature of this role is the opportunity to work alongside civil engineering colleagues both to develop new modules in robotics and digital automation and to embed these technologies into existing modules across our civil engineering programmes, from structures and geotechnics to transport. The post holder will be expected to support colleagues in bringing automation, data and programming into their own teaching.
We are building a new strand in this area and are looking for someone with the enthusiasm and creativity to help shape it from the ground up. Experience of applying these technologies in infrastructure or construction contexts is highly desirable. Where it is not already present, candidates will need to demonstrate how they would translate their automation expertise into civil engineering problems, and a genuine appetite for working across disciplines. There will be opportunities to work with industry partners on knowledge exchange projects and to develop a research profile contributing to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
Join us to inspire future engineers, drive innovative research, and collaborate with industry leaders to shape the future of engineering education.
About you
We require candidates who can teach robotics and digital automation convincingly to civil engineers. We are looking for individuals who can deliver technically rigorous and engaging teaching across topics such as programming for engineering applications, automation of design and analysis workflows, sensors, data acquisition and monitoring, AI/ML applied to engineering problems, and robotics and additive manufacturing in construction - and who can help students judge where these technologies add value and where they fail, including on efficiency, sustainability and cybersecurity grounds. Practical insight from professional or research experience is important.
Candidates should hold a degree (or above) in Civil Engineering, Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics or a related engineering discipline, together with relevant professional or research experience. Candidates from a civil engineering background will need to evidence strong automation and programming capability; candidates from an automation background will need to evidence a clear commitment to applying it in infrastructure and construction. Confident programming ability in Python is essential, together with the ability to teach it to students who have no computing background. A chartership or professional registration with a relevant engineering body is desirable.
A teaching qualification and experience of teaching in Higher Education is highly desirable, as is experience of curriculum design and of working with colleagues to embed new content into existing modules; we also value evidence of effective training delivery, mentoring, or knowledge transfer within industry or research settings. Experience of working in or collaborating with relevant industry is highly desirable.
An interest in developing a research profile aligned to the University's Transforming Futures Research Strategy 2020–2030 is expected, in areas such as digitalisation of infrastructure and construction, AI-driven automation, construction robotics, Human-Robot Interaction, or related fields. Applicants will have the opportunity to engage with our established collaboration with the Bristol Robotics Laboratory on construction robotics.
