Position Summary

Job Description:

The Department of Communication and Writing seeks an imaginative, forward-thinking educator and filmmaker with experience in teaching narrative film production to join a growing, engaged, student-centered Department of Communication and Writing. Our nine faculty members and dedicated adjunct faculty, who represent programs in Film and Media Arts, Mass Communication, and English and Writing, share a passion for teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, embracing new technologies, and preparing graduates who are sought after by regional and national employers.

The successful candidate will join the Film and Media Arts program, where collaboration is deeply embedded in the culture. With outstanding production facilities, including a professional-grade studio, dedicated editing bays, and an extensive equipment inventory, the department provides the tools and institutional support faculty and students need to produce award-winning work. Teaching four courses per semester, the successful candidate will help students take original narrative film projects from concept to completion in collaboration with one another while building the technical and professional skills required by the film industry and other industries focused on the creation and analysis of media content. Through a campus-wide culture of colleagues who are eager to work across disciplinary boundaries, the program maintains strong partnerships with Mass Communication and Sport Media, and the successful candidate will join colleagues in building new opportunities, integrating emerging technologies, and contributing to a vibrant culture of learning and success.

A hallmark of a York College education is our commitment to engage students in real-world experiences. Our faculty are encouraged to develop coursework and partnerships with nonprofits and industry partners, where students work hand-in-hand with practitioners to create materials and solutions that serve our community. Students in the department consistently win and place in the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts and On Location Competitions, as well as the College Broadcasters Inc. Awards. In addition to these national awards, our students showcase their work at the Film and Media Arts annual Student Film event and participate in clubs such as the Film and Media Society and WVYC 88.1 FM: The York College Radio Station. Our graduates go on to successful careers across the film and media spectrum, from local news outlets and media companies to national outlets such as ESPN and Netflix.

Facilities & Resources

Our programs are backed by outstanding production facilities and a supportive institutional ecosystem that helps students produce exceptional work:

  • Film Viewing Room: A purpose-built film theater with high-definition digital projection and a 7.1 surround sound system.
  • Purpose-Built Production Studios: A professional-grade studio complex including a TV studio, a dedicated control room, studio space for set construction, a green screen, and industry-standard equipment.
  • Editing Bays & Post-Production Facilities: Three dedicated editing bays with fast-processing computers and additional editing and production spaces to support coursework, student projects, and faculty creative work.
  • High-Quality Equipment: A strong, growing inventory of cameras, audio gear, lighting, and accessories available for both student and faculty use.

Outcome:

The successful candidate will strengthen the Film and Media Arts curriculum, guiding students as they develop original narrative work and preparing them for careers in film and media, while remaining professionally active.

Essential Functions

  • Teach introductory through advanced production courses, with an emphasis on narrative filmmaking.
  • Advise and mentor students, including academic advising, independent studies, internship support, and preparation for careers or graduate study.
  • Serve on departmental and college-wide committees.
  • Maintain an active professional and scholarly agenda.

Experience and Education Required

  • MFA (or equivalent terminal degree) in film production, directing, screenwriting, cinematography, or a closely related field, completed by August 2027.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching undergraduate production courses, including experience as instructor of record.
  • Demonstrated experience producing narrative films, with a strong grasp of cinematic storytelling and film set culture and crew roles.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent college-level teaching skills and the ability to utilize educational technology to support student learning and success.
  • Student-focused approach, with the ability to learn and apply new concepts and ideas to support our diverse population of learners.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to working as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to apply supervisory skills and motivate undergraduate students.
  • Experience with the tools and techniques necessary to write, shoot, edit, and mix narrative films.
  • Project management experience and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.

Applicants should submit a Teaching Statement, a link to a reel of their narrative film work, and information for three confidential letters of recommendation.

Finalists will be asked to provide two sample syllabi for undergraduate courses they have designed and taught as the instructor of record related to the position. At least one sample syllabus should be from an introductory or lower-level production-related course.

Finalists will be expected to demonstrate competence with filmmaking tools and techniques as part of the on-campus interview process.
