Position Summary

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications for one Full-Time Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in Mental Health Counseling and Counseling Psychology, in the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology (CSEP). Candidates will be affiliated with both our Mental Health Counseling (MHC) Program accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) and our Combined PhD Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology (CPSP), accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The GSE is committed to fostering an inclusive community of engaged scholars who prioritize research, teaching, and community action that address educational, economic, social, and health disparities. CSEP is an interdisciplinary and collaborative department operating within a community-based, scientist-practitioner methodology. In this model, we produce cutting-edge research that informs students, scholars, and practitioners to build upon the strengths of diverse populations. Faculty demonstrate a commitment to creating a collegial academic environment characterized by equity, social justice, interdisciplinary collaboration and by ensuring that the research and practice mission of GSE contributes to local schools, agencies, and neighborhoods.

Our mental health and counseling programs are expanding to address the mental health workforce shortage in New York State and beyond. We seek motivated, collaborative colleagues, eager to engage with others on research and grants, and whose scholarship will contribute to the department in one or more of the following areas:

  • Social and structural determinants of health and mental health inequity
  • Culturally responsive treatment
  • Process-outcome research in psychotherapy or counseling
  • Mental health in the workplace
  • AI-empowered innovations in psychotherapy or counseling
  • Clinical supervision
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Community-based research

We encourage applications from scholars who use critical and innovative approaches to transforming existing professional training, work, social, and/or health systems to ensure the well-being of all people particularly those from minoritized groups. Ideal candidates can make clear connections between their research, teaching, and service, and the needs of marginalized and/or underserved populations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct exemplary research, commensurate with Research 1 tenure track faculty appointments, leading to the development of innovative ideas and publications in prominent scholarly outlets.
  • Pursue extramural funding for research initiatives.
  • Teach two courses per semester at the graduate level.
  • Advise and mentor graduate students, including chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees.
  • Support efforts to recruit M.S. and Ph.D. students.
  • Fulfill service responsibilities related to program, departmental, and university affiliations.

Appointments are for a ten-month academic year beginning the Fall of 2027.

The Search Committee will accept applications until the position is filled. For best consideration, please submit your materials by August 20, 2026.
