URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Serve as a tenure-track faculty member in the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program of the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering. Establish and sustain a nationally and internationally recognized research program in advanced manufacturing operations, autonomous systems, and cyber-physical and robotic systems; teach undergraduate and graduate courses in industrial and systems engineering; and contribute to service within the department, college, university, and profession.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and lead an externally funded, nationally and internationally recognized research program in one or more of the following areas: manufacturing systems; advanced manufacturing operations; optimization; simulation; learning and planning under uncertainty; cyber-physical systems; autonomous and robotic systems; human-centered automation and workforce systems; human autonomy teaming and human-system integration; Internet of Things (IoT); and hardware-software integration.
  • Pursue and secure sponsored research funding from federal, state, industry, and other sources; prepare and submit competitive proposals; and manage awarded projects in accordance with sponsor and University requirements.
  • Disseminate research results through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and other scholarly outlets, and become a recognized leader in the field.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in industrial and systems engineering, including existing courses in operations research, simulation, manufacturing and automation, data analytics, and systems engineering, as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Develop new courses and curricular materials in the candidate’s area of expertise that strengthen the ABET-accredited B.S. in ISE, the accelerated B.S. in ISE to M.S. in Systems Engineering, and the M.S. and Ph.D. programs.
  • Recruit, advise, supervise, and mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students; serve on graduate thesis and dissertation committees; and advise undergraduate students.
  • Foster a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for students, faculty, and staff in the classroom, the laboratory, and the department.
  • Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional service, including committee work, program assessment, and ABET accreditation activities.
  • Collaborate with departmental colleagues in established research strengths (autonomous systems, cyber-physical security, Industry 4.0, manufacturing systems, machine learning, and human factors) and with existing laboratories in digital twins, undersea vehicle technologies, and voting systems.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mentor undergraduate capstone design teams in yearlong projects funded and mentored by industry and government partners.
  • Contribute to undergraduate minors in robotics, sustainability, and entrepreneurship as appropriate to the candidate’s expertise.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with Rhode Island’s network of defense, marine, and advanced manufacturing firms to facilitate sponsored research, student placements, and access to testbeds.
  • Participate in student recruitment, outreach, and departmental events as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair or the Dean of Engineering.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printers, and standard office equipment; word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software; scientific computing, optimization, simulation, data analytics, and machine learning software; laboratory, manufacturing, robotic, and cyber-physical testbed equipment appropriate to the research program.

PREFERRED:

  1. At least one degree (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral) in Industrial Engineering or Industrial and Systems Engineering.
  2. Demonstrated track record in computational and/or experimental research in optimization, simulation, or learning and planning under uncertainty.
  3. Ability to teach courses in at least one of the following subjects: operations research, simulation, manufacturing and automation, data analytics, or systems engineering, as well as the ability to develop new courses in their area of expertise.
