Liberal Studies
New York University Arts and Science

Liberal Studies at New York University invites applications for three Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor positions to begin September 1, 2027, pending administrative and budgetary approval.

The Liberal Studies Core is a dynamic liberal arts curriculum that provides a global and interdisciplinary foundation for nearly 100 NYU majors. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts is an innovative global studies major grounded in the spatial, conceptual, and temporal understandings of a highly interconnected world, with a program of study that is distinguished by experiential learning, study away, and independent research focused in an interdisciplinary concentration. In both the LS Core and the GLS major, small, seminar-style classes and close faculty-student interaction provide students with the benefits of a liberal arts college within a large urban research university. We are especially interested in hiring qualified candidates who can contribute their research, teaching and service to the diversity and excellence of Liberal Studies and NYU.

We seek applicants in the following areas:

ARTS & CULTURES

PhD in the humanities, broadly conceived (Classics, Ancient World Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Egyptology, Indian Ocean or East Asian Studies with specialization in the ancient world, Ancient Art History and Archaeology with literature teaching experience, or other fields related to the study of the ancient and premodern worlds). Preferred candidates will have a specialization in the Ancient World who can also teach the Global Middle Ages and Renaissance. The candidate must be able to teach the first two courses in the Liberal Studies Arts and Cultures Core sequence: "Arts and Cultures across Antiquity" & "Arts and Cultures towards the Crossroads". This includes the ability to teach both ancient literature from a diverse set of cultures and their visual and material cultural production. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate interdisciplinary and cross-cultural competency.

GLOBAL WORKS AND SOCIETY

PhD in Political Theory, Philosophy, History, or related fields in the social sciences and the humanities. Candidates should have the ability to teach global works that examine enduring questions of philosophy, religion, political and social theory, and history from antiquity to the early 18th century in the Global Works and Society sequence of the Core Curriculum. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to draw on ancient and early modern sources in their teaching with a global emphasis. Candidates must embrace interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches from a variety of global perspectives and must have the ability to examine relationships of power and to interrogate the historical roots of current challenges. Candidates must have the ability to teach upper-division seminars in their areas of expertise.

GLOBAL CULTURES

Ph.D. in East Asian Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Comparative Literature, History, Political Science, Anthropology, or related fields in the Social Sciences or Humanities. Candidates must have the ability to teach interdisciplinary, intersectional seminars on East Asia to introduce undergraduates to the politics, history, intellectual thought, arts, culture, and development of the region within a global context, interrogating the historical and interconnected roots of current geopolitical and cultural forces, including but not limited to ethno-nationalism, gender, race, capitalism and neocolonialism. Preference for expertise in Korea and/or Japan.

Minimum qualifications: Successful candidates must have a PhD conferred by the date of appointment, or have received the PhD no more than three years before the date of appointment. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share Liberal Studies’ commitment to equity and inclusion and belonging, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life in LS and NYU. Candidates must present demonstrated experience and commitment to interdisciplinarity, intersectionality, and a teaching approach informed by global perspectives. Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching required; some college-level teaching experience, and evidence of outstanding scholarship and relevant professional activity are desirable.

Visiting Clinical Faculty teach three classes per semester, advise undergraduates, and may optionally contribute service to Liberal Studies and to the University.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $75,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Applications include ONLY (1) a cover letter (2) and a current CV. Complete applications must be recorded by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (US), November 22, 2026. Applications recorded after this deadline will not be considered.
