About UNCSA and The School of Music

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) stands as one of the nation’s premier creative and performing arts institutions. Founded in 1963 as America’s first public arts conservatory, UNCSA has earned a reputation for excellence by nurturing the next generation of gifted artists. Through rigorous training, immersive experiences, and a deeply collaborative environment, UNCSA equips emerging creatives with the knowledge, discipline, and inspiration needed to thrive in their fields and lead meaningful lives.

UNCSA plays a vital role in enriching the cultural and economic landscape of North Carolina and beyond. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina’s renowned “City of Arts and Innovation,” UNCSA is situated in a progressive Southern city known for its vibrant downtown, rich arts scene, and welcoming community. As one of 17 distinguished institutions in the University of North Carolina system, the university serves nearly 1,400 students, from high school through graduate-level programs, creating a dynamic and diverse artistic community.

Among its five world-class conservatories, Drama, Dance, Design & Production, Filmmaking, and Music, the School of Music offers a transformative conservatory experience. With 292 students, 30 full-time faculty, and 34 adjunct instructors, the School of Music fosters artistic excellence through intensive individual study, mentorship from dedicated faculty, and access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a 4,000-square-foot film scoring stage that is large enough to accommodate a 75-piece symphony orchestra as well as an additional recording studio for small recording sessions. Students benefit from more than 200 performances annually, including recitals, concerts, and operas, many of which feature interdisciplinary collaborations with other UNCSA arts schools. This rich performance culture not only hones students’ craft but also prepares them to be versatile, confident, and impactful artists in a global creative economy.
