The Schulich School of Music of McGill University is Canada’s leading institution for the professional training of performers and composers, and the humanities-based and scientific research in music and sound. We seek individuals with an international profile in music performance and research who will maintain a high level of professional activity and are able to teach and supervise students in all university degree and diploma programs through to the doctoral level. Montreal offers a vibrant multicultural living environment and is consistently rated among the best student cities in the world.

The Department of Performance invites applications from accomplished brass instrumentalists for a tenure-track position in Brass at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 1, 2027. We seek an accomplished brass instrumentalist with a specialization in trumpet, although outstanding candidates whose primary expertise is in trombone, horn, or tuba are also encouraged to apply. The appointment will be for an initial three-year term. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered for an exceptional candidate.

Duties: Academic responsibilities include teaching, research, and service to the University. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active international profile with a high level of professional activity, while teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate, graduate, and diploma levels, including those preparing for professional careers. The position also involves supervision of doctoral students in brass performance as a member of doctoral advisory committees. Teaching responsibilities will include applied instruction and chamber music coaching and may also encompass courses and seminars related to the candidate’s area of expertise, such as brass literature, orchestral excerpts, performance practice, pedagogy, or other specialized topics. Service responsibilities will include leadership and coordination of the Brass Area and may involve participation in departmental and School committees, as well as contributions to curriculum development and program enhancement. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to develop and sustain a level of artistic activity and/or research consistent with the University's expectations for tenure.

Qualifications: A doctorate or equivalent professional experience, together with a distinguished international reputation as a performer, is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching students at the highest levels of performance and scholarship, broad knowledge of the brass repertoire, and a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and supportive learning environment. The candidate will also contribute to student recruitment and outreach initiatives that engage and inspire emerging musicians. Exceptional leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and the broader musical community.

Applicants should submit the following items using McGill’s platform, Workday (see https://www.mcgill.ca/music/about-us/employment for instructions and links to apply). Further inquiries may be addressed to Prof. Danielle Gaudry, Chair, Department of Performance search.musicperformance@mcgill.ca.

  • a cover letter outlining the candidate’s qualifications and suitability for the position
  • a detailed curriculum vitae
  • a link to a video recording of a performance demonstrating artistic excellence and containing at least two contrasting selections
  • the names and contact information of three referees

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by November 20, 2026. Please note that applicants are not required to submit a teaching video with the initial application. Selected candidates may be invited to participate in a virtual interview. Finalists will be invited to demonstrate their teaching and artistic expertise by teaching a lesson and/or masterclass, coaching a chamber ensemble, presenting a short recital, and meeting with the Dean, students, and members of the Search Committee.

Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

McGill University is committed to equity and diversity within its community and values academic rigour and excellence. We welcome and encourage applications from racialized persons/visible minorities, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities.

At McGill, research that reflects diverse intellectual traditions, methodologies, and modes of dissemination and translation is valued and encouraged. Candidates are invited to demonstrate their research impact both within and across academic disciplines and in other sectors, such as government, communities, or industry.

McGill further recognizes and fairly considers the impact of leaves (e.g., family care or health-related) that may contribute to career interruptions or slowdowns. Candidates are encouraged to signal any leave that affected productivity, or that may have had an effect on their career path. This information will be considered to ensure the equitable assessment of the candidate’s record.

McGill implements an employment equity program and encourages members of designated equity groups to self-identify. It further seeks to ensure the equitable treatment and full inclusion of persons with disabilities by striving for the implementation of universal design principles transversally, across all facets of the University community, and through accommodation policies and procedures. Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations for any part of the application process may contact, in confidence, this email.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
