Position Summary

The Department of Music at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications for the endowed Slee Chair in Music at the rank of an advanced Assistant or early career Associate Professor in music composition with a specialty in electronic music. This tenure-track position is expected to begin in January 2027 (spring 2027 semester).

Qualified candidates hold the Ph.D., D.M.A. or DPhil in music composition or a related field, have four years of post-graduate college or university level teaching experience, have a record of accomplishment as an active composer in the field of electronic and instrumental composition, and show evidence of high-profile performances (in recognized festivals) or commissions.

Preferred candidates will additionally possess advanced knowledge of software tools and equipment related to interactive live digital signal processing, spatial audio, recording and electronic music production.

Their creative work and teaching would be expected to make use of the department’s newly equipped 1,500 square foot Intermedia Lab and Performance Space which features a 22 speaker Meyer Audio array powered by Meyer’s latest generation Nadia processor and Space Map Go. They would also work collaboratively with other faculty and staff to direct the use of the department’s four smaller electronic music studios.

Expectations for the Slee Professor would include supporting the mission of the Center for 21st Century Music, which sponsors a range of activities in the field of new music composition, performance and artistic research. In this capacity, it is expected that the Slee Professor would work closely with faculty on various initiatives in support of the PhD in Composition program. These initiatives involve facilitating visits with guest ensembles and composers, talks, workshops and joint seminar presentations.

The position involves a 2+2 teaching load comprising a mix of composition studio lessons, graduate and undergraduate seminars and lecture courses in composition and electronic music as well as general education courses in areas of interest to the candidate. It is anticipated that the Slee Professor would develop new upper-level undergraduate courses to assist in the expansion of the Music Recording and Production curriculum.
