The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, a division of the University of Virginia located in Wise, Virginia, invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Business and Economics beginning August 2027. Appointment will be at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor, depending on the successful candidate’s academic credentials and qualifications.

The department seeks a versatile faculty member whose primary teaching specialization is in one of the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Analytics
  • Accounting

Applicants must identify a primary teaching area from the four areas listed above and a secondary teaching area in any subject taught by the Department of Business and Economics in their Cover Letter. The secondary area will be another one of the four primary areas or another subject area within the Department's curriculum. Candidates are not expected to teach across all four primary areas. The successful candidate will contribute substantively in both the primary and secondary areas according to departmental needs and documented qualifications.

About the Department

The Department of Business and Economics emphasizes teaching excellence, student mentoring, and applied learning within a public liberal arts setting. The department offers undergraduate programs across business, economics, and hospitality and graduate study in Technology Management and Data Analytics, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and professional engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in the candidate’s primary and secondary teaching areas, and graduate courses when appropriately qualified and assigned. Instruction may include face-to-face and online formats.
  • Advise and mentor students; support recruitment, retention, and professional development; and maintain regular office hours.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, assessment, departmental committees, and College service.
  • Engage in scholarly and professional activity appropriate to the rank and appointment.
  • Collaborate with business, industry, and community partners to support applied learning, internships, and other experiential opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

Instructor: An earned master’s degree by the start date in Finance, Economics, Analytics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a closely related field.

Assistant Professor: An earned Ph.D., or equivalent terminal degree by the start date in Finance, Economics, Analytics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a closely related field. Advanced ABD candidates will be considered provided the terminal degree is completed by the start date.

All candidates: Academic preparation and/or relevant professional qualifications sufficient to teach in one primary area from Finance, Economics, Analytics, or Accounting and in at least one additional subject area taught by the Department of Business and Economics; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated commitment to student-centered teaching and mentoring; ability to collaborate with colleagues; and ability to teach in the assigned instructional formats. Qualifications in both teaching areas must be documented in the application materials and satisfy the College's faculty-credentialing requirements.

Location: This position is based in Wise, Virginia, situated in the far southwestern corner of the state near the Kentucky and Tennessee borders.

This position requires regular on-campus participation in teaching, advising, office hours, and departmental and College activities. Online teaching assignments do not make this a fully remote appointment.

Anticipated nine-month salary range:

Instructor: $68,000-$80,000.

Assistant Professor: $85,000-$125,000.

Final compensation will reflect the successful candidate's qualifications, teaching areas and experience within the applicable approved range.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with full consideration given to applications received by December 22, 2026. The position will remain open until filled.

Required Documents

Cover Letter, CV/Resume, Statement of Teaching Philosophy, unofficial graduate transcripts (official transcripts will be required upon hiring), and contact information for three references. Candidates seeking consideration at the Assistant Professor rank should also submit a statement of research interests and evidence of scholarly activity or research potential.

The cover letter must identify the rank sought, a primary teaching area from Finance, Economics, Analytics, or Accounting, and a secondary teaching area from among subjects taught by the Department of Business and Economics. Application materials must document preparation to teach in both areas. Reference letters are not required with the initial application; applicants will be notified before references are contacted.
