Description

The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Chinese language to commence Fall 2027. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track term appointment, renewable subject to satisfactory performance, programmatic need, and available funding.

Stony Brook’s Chinese program serves one of the most diverse undergraduate populations in the country. It teaches a full sequence from the true beginner through advanced levels, offers dedicated sections for heritage learners, and supports the Minor in China Studies. The successful candidate will teach across that sequence [3 courses per semester]; prepare syllabi, materials, and assessments and maintain common standards across sections; advise students; participate in placement, challenge, and proficiency examinations; contribute to curriculum development for the program; and take part in departmental service.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher (or foreign equivalent) in Chinese language pedagogy, teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language, Chinese linguistics, applied linguistics, or a closely related discipline, completed prior to the start date.
  • At least two years of experience teaching Chinese at the college or university level, including documented teaching assistantships of record.
  • Experience teaching Chinese at more than one level of the curriculum.
  • Experience with technology-enhanced instruction and with a learning management system.
  • Superior or near-native proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (ACTFL Superior or equivalent), including the ability to read and teach both simplified and traditional characters.
  • Professional proficiency in English sufficient to teach, advise, and conduct departmental business.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness.

Preferred qualifications

  • Doctorate in Chinese language pedagogy, Chinese linguistics, applied linguistics, second language acquisition, Chinese literature, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching heritage learners and using differentiated instruction in mixed-ability classrooms.
  • Training or demonstrated practice in proficiency-oriented and performance-based instruction; ACTFL OPI/WPT familiarity or certification.
  • Experience with curriculum design, materials development, and common assessment across sections.
  • Experience coordinating multi-section courses or mentoring teaching assistants and part-time instructors, and contributing to co-curricular and program-building work.

Special notes

This is an in-person appointment at the West Campus, governed by the Policies of the SUNY Board of Trustees and the State/UUP agreement. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States and must complete a pre-employment background check.

Application Instructions

All application materials must be submitted online. Please use the Apply Now button to begin your application. A complete application consists of a cover letter addressing the qualifications; a CV; a statement of teaching philosophy of two pages or less addressing learners at different levels, including heritage learners; evidence of teaching effectiveness; one sample syllabus and one sample lesson plan; and three professional references, from whom letters will be requested at the semi-finalist stage.
