Description
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks a visionary physician leader, scholar, and steward of academic medicine to serve as the next Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a department with a distinctive legacy in complex reconstruction and to advance its missions in education, research, and clinical care.
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is a global leader in biomedical discovery, medical education, and patient care, supported by a collaborative academic and clinical environment and a longstanding commitment to excellence, integrity, and service. The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery contributes to this mission through outstanding clinical care and training, advancing work across all three pillars of university’s mission.
The department has helped define the frontiers of reconstructive transplantation – highlighted by landmark bilateral arm transplants – and maintains internationally recognized leadership in peripheral nerve surgery, targeted muscle reinnervation, and complex microvascular reconstruction. These distinctive capabilities uniquely position the department to shape the future of care of patients with complex, life-altering conditions.
The next Director will build on these distinctive strengths and guide the department’s continued growth as the need for complex care increases and the field evolves. The successful candidate will provide strategic vision, foster respectful collaboration and inclusion, and advance the department’s work across all mission areas. Opportunities in evolving areas of the field, including nerve surgery and transplantation, underscore the potential for continued growth and impact.
Serving as the face of the department and a representative of Johns Hopkins locally, nationally, and globally, the Director must embody honesty and integrity, effective communication, collaborative leadership, and sound judgment. The ideal candidate will excel at the highest level while recognizing and supporting the importance of each part of the university’s mission.
The Director will provide overall stewardship of the department, including strategic planning, fiscal oversight, faculty and trainee development, and the advancement of clinical care, education, and research. The successful candidate will demonstrate financial acumen, executive leadership experience, and a commitment to inclusivity. An understanding of the importance of development and philanthropy is valued.
Johns Hopkins University is committed to supporting an inclusive and respectful environment for all members of the community. We encourage applications from individuals whose experiences, perspectives, and scholarship will enhance the excellence of the department and the School of Medicine.
