We are recruiting Specialist Mentors (Mental Health) to provide one-to-one support to students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. We will consider candidates available to work between 15 and 37 hours per week during semester time (30 weeks per year). Some overtime outside of semester may be available.
Operating primarily during semesters, Specialist Mentors (Mental Health) deliver tailored one-to-one support to students, largely funded through Disabled Students’ Allowance. Team members hold high-level qualifications and actively maintain their professional body memberships and continuing professional development in accordance with the DfE NMH Mandatory Qualifications. To offer cohesive, integrated support, the teams collaborate closely with Advisers and colleagues across Inclusive Support as well as the broader Student Support Services department.

- Manage a caseload of work with a range of students, including students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
What skills do I need?
- An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.
- Qualification, training and professional membership as required by the DSA Membership Standards for NMH Providers.
- Experience of providing one-to-one support to individuals with mental health difficulties.
- Substantial experience of working within a related field.
This role will not attract sufficient points to obtain a sponsored Skilled Worker visa under the points-based immigration system, however applications are welcome from candidates who don’t currently have the right to work in the UK, but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route.
The successful applicant will need to be subject to a background disclosure check by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before any appointment can be confirmed.
The post holder will work in a hybrid pattern both remotely and on-site. Staff work at least one day per week on campus, two days if they work three days or more. They will mainly be based on the Headington campus but may need to travel to other campuses.
As an Oxford Brookes employee, you will enjoy a total of a minimum of 25 days holiday, rising with your service, plus eight bank holidays and additional university concessionary days (normally five per year). Part-time employees receive annual leave, bank holidays and concessionary days on a pro-rata basis.
As a Specialist Mentor you are required to take your annual leave during University holidays. Annual Leave will be paid as part of your annual salary.
We have an extremely competitive Local Government Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions, as well as providing all staff with access to an occupational health service, financial education, and a comprehensive employee assistance helpline.
