Associate Lecturer – Technical Studies (Architecture)
Royal College of Art | School of Architecture (3 x 0.08FTE roles)
Teaching January until mid February on Fridays, and Mid February until end of June, either Tuesdays or Thursday depending on the availability of the applicant.
The Royal College of Art, the world’s leading university of art and design, is seeking an Associate Lecturer in Technical Studies to join our Architecture team and contribute specialist technical expertise to our postgraduate teaching.
We are looking for practising professionals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Environmental design and engineering, ideally integrated with architectural design and regenerative practice.
- Structural design, with an emphasis on design integration and regenerative practice.
- Retrofit design and the transformation of existing buildings.
- Technical architecture, including detailing, materials and construction across multiple scales.
Working alongside Architecture Design Studio, you will support postgraduate students in developing the technical dimensions of their architectural proposals. You will teach a group of approximately 6–9 students over 16 days, predominantly between January and early June, contributing to two Technical Studies projects.
Teaching will span four key areas: existing buildings and retrofit; vernacular and passive design; structure and materials informed by studio-led design topics; and planet-positive performance, including embodied and operational carbon.
You will deliver engaging, research-informed teaching, provide individual and group tutorials, guide students’ technical development and give constructive feedback. You will also contribute to the assessment of student work, curriculum development and relevant programme activities, helping students connect architectural ambition with technical rigour and environmental responsibility.
About you
You will bring demonstrable professional expertise in environmental design, structural design, retrofit or technical architecture, together with an understanding of the relevant industry context. You will be committed to high-quality postgraduate teaching and creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment in which students from diverse backgrounds can thrive.
You will have experience of individual and group teaching, including online and blended learning, and familiarity with RIBA/ARB requirements for professional architectural education, or equivalent. A commitment to continuing professional development and keeping abreast of developments in your specialist field is essential.
A Master’s degree in a related discipline, experience supervising Master’s-level work and experience designing and delivering postgraduate courses are desirable.
Join the RCA and help shape the next generation of architects through innovative, technically informed and environmentally responsible design education.
