Position Title:
Clinical Term – Assistant or Associate Professor Equine Field Services

Appointment Type:
Faculty

Job Description

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, in Ames, Iowa, invites applications for a full-time Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor faculty position in Equine Field Services in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. The successful candidate will join 3 other equine ambulatory veterinarians (Drs. Joan Howard (ABVP), Lauren Hughes (ACVIM-LA) and Kara Frerichs to enhance the regional prominence of the Equine Field Services program at Iowa State University through activities in clinical service, teaching, and scholarship. As a practice group we value a collaborative and collegial work environment, strive to provide high-quality diagnostic and treatment options to clients, and place an emphasis on client communication and outreach activities. We have built a practice around clients that engage as an active and informed partner in their horses' care and appreciate the benefits our team can offer as a direct extension of the teaching hospital.

The majority of the position will be dedicated to professional ambulatory clinical practice based out of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC), a state-of-the-art teaching hospital providing specialized care for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Clinical practice will include training veterinary students and house officers (interns) within our large animal rotating internship program. A commitment to practicing a customer-centric service philosophy and maintaining a collegial working environment is expected. As part of the general practice of equine ambulatory veterinary medicine, the successful candidate is expected to develop/establish their skills and caseload within a focused, or niche area of equine veterinary medicine. Participation in didactic and laboratory teaching, independent or collaborative creative scholarship, and academic service are expected in varying amounts dependent on the candidate's interest and departmental needs. The amount of research, and other activities will be commensurate with the experience, rank, interests, and Position Responsibility Statement (PRS) of the successful candidate. Some after-hours ambulatory on call for Equine Field Services will be shared with other EFS clinicians (average ~25-30%) and may be discussed with the current Veterinary Clinical Sciences department chair (Dr. Wong).

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before first day of employment
  • At least 1 year of experience practicing equine veterinary medicine

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical interest or advanced training/continuing education in lameness/sports medicine
