About URI:

The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students across its graduate and undergraduate programs and is the State’s flagship public research university, as well as the land grant and sea grant university, for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston, and the Bay Campus is located in Narragansett. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City.

A Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, beginning in Fall 2027. We are particularly interested in candidates developing innovative technologies and computational approaches to understand, monitor, restore, or enhance human health and function. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation technologies, robotics, bioinstrumentation, biosensors, wearable technologies, neuroprosthetics and assistive technologies, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, AI-driven immersive technologies and biomedical big data.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) became an independent department within the College of Engineering in the 2026 academic year, following a long history as a program within the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. As part of this transition, the undergraduate curriculum was revised to establish three primary tracks: Bioinstrumentation and Neural Engineering, Biomechanics and Prosthetics, and Biomedical AI. Biomedical Engineering currently offers a B.S. degree and partners with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The Department is currently developing independent M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

Our BME faculty conduct research in neural signal processing, neuro-instrumentation, neuro-robotics, neuromodulation, wearable health systems, digital health, medical imaging and signal processing, physiological modeling, biomedical AI and machine learning, and assistive and rehabilitation technologies. The interdisciplinary nature of the Department provides faculty with opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across the University. A recently inaugurated 195,000-square-foot engineering building provides an excellent environment for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

THE POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR A HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE

POSITION SUMMARY:

Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses while establishing a high-quality research program in biomedical engineering.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Communicative Disorders, Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Nursing, Computer Science and Statistics, Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and beyond. These opportunities will continue to expand as URI establishes its new Medical School, for which the University is currently recruiting a Founding Dean. Many BME faculty are members of the George and Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience and participate in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program (INP), providing additional opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration in neuroscience and neurotechnology. The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program has also recently established an undergraduate program, further expanding opportunities for interdisciplinary education and mentorship. Ongoing collaborations exist with research hospitals and industry partners in the Providence and Boston areas.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  1. An earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  2. Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement in biomedical engineering, as evidenced by publications, presentations, or projects.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in biomedical engineering.
  4. Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups, including, but not limited to, diversity in race, ethnicity, and gender.

Preferred

  1. Demonstrated potential to attract external research funding.
  2. Demonstrated potential to conduct research as part of multidisciplinary teams.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering.

EEO Statement:

URI is unwavering in its commitment to equal opportunity, community, equity, and diversity. In furtherance of its mission to serve and support all learners as the state’s public flagship university, URI continues to expand efforts to recruit and retain a broadly representative workforce as well as to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of those efforts.
