We are looking for
a Postdoctoral Researcher
in Conservation genomics of the endangered Saimaa ringed seal
to join us in the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit at the Faculty of Sciences as part of the European Union Life Project “LIFE in Support of Survival: Uniting local and science-based know-how to support the long-term survival of the endangered Saimaa ringed seal population"
About the project
The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa saimensis) is a critically endangered seal that lives exclusively in Lake Saimaa, Finland. Although the population has grown thanks to successful conservation efforts, the future of the species continues to be challenged by climate change, dangerous fishing gear, disturbance to breeding caused by human activities, and low genetic diversity.
The LIFE SOS project aims to increase the Saimaa ringed seal population to approximately 700 individuals by 2032. To support conservation, the project combines the latest genetic research, population modelling, and practical conservation work to ensure that conservation measures can be planned and targeted as effectively as possible.
Under the lead of the University of Oulu and in close collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland the project aims at developing efficient DNA-based monitoring tools and strategies for the Saimaa ringed seal and to use state-of-the-art genomics methods to investigate seal pup mortality.
