Job Description
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) brings together more than four decades of innovative and life-saving research on vaccines and infectious diseases. [http:// www.medschool.umaryland.edu/cvd/](http:// www.medschool.umaryland.edu/cvd/) As an organized research center within the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), CVD comprises a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed countries. We work to prevent and treat enteric and respiratory diseases, to reduce the threat of malaria and antimicrobial resistance, and to identify, understand, and combat other tropic and emerging pathogens burdening low-resource settings. Training is a critical component of our work to ensure the foundation for the next generation of scientists and researchers committed to our mission.
The CVD is seeking a Post Doctoral Fellow to join Dr. Sztein’s Laboratory.
Responsibilities
The Sztein Lab is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow that has in depth study of immunity to enteric fevers caused by the human-restricted Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (ST, typhoid fever) and serovar Paratyphi (SP, paratyphoid fever) which are major public health concerns. Given the growing antimicrobial resistance across the genus Salmonella, the generation of multivalent enteric fever vaccines are urgently needed. Thus, in depth studies of the immune response and which immune responses are associated with protection are urgently needed. Your studies will greatly extend major discoveries in Dr. Sztein’s laboratory during the past 3 decades in understanding T- and B-cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and innate immunity elicited by the licensed oral Ty21a and other candidate S. Typhi vaccines, as well as controlled human infection models. These studies will include system biology approaches to integrate epigenetics and sc-RNAseq transcriptional measurements and detailed immunological data (e.g., classical T-CMI, B-CMI and unconventional T cells immunity) following immunization or exposure to wild-type organisms with the ultimate goal of uncover key immunological responses associated with protection.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience of immune responses to infectious diseases and vaccines in different human populations including pregnant women, newborns, infants, and adults
- Strong experience with research focused on immune mechanisms that could prolong immunity from persistent infection via vaccination.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with experience in immune responses to infectious diseases and vaccines in different human populations including pregnant women, newborns, infants, and adults will be especially competitive.
The ideal candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills, scientific independence, and an interest in developing rigorous experimental systems.
