Description

The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor without tenure by reason of funding (WOT), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a clinical practice focused on glioma and other malignant brain tumors, serve as a principal neurosurgical faculty member for the Gamma Knife and stereotactic radiosurgery program, and establish an independent laboratory research program focused on glioma biology and therapeutics. We seek applicants who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in patient care, scholarship, reserach, teaching, and service.

Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1–June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July–June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The base salary range for the Assistant Professor title will be $25,000–$56,250 per month ($300,000–$675,000 annually), commensurate with experience, discipline, qualifications, and academic rank, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range includes compensation provided through the University.

Additional compensation associated with this position may include guaranteed monthly additional compensation through the University of Washington Physicians (UWP) practice plan of $10,000–$17,000 per month ($120,000–$204,000 annually). Total fixed compensation (base salary plus Monthly Additional Compensation) for this position will not exceed $675,000 annually for the rank of Assistant Professor.

Other compensation associated with this position may include incentive compensation through the UWP practice plan. Additional compensation may also include a relocation incentive/moving allowance, administrative supplement, and/or productivity incentive, as applicable and in accordance with institutional policies.

Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided through the University of Washington Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization. Additional information regarding UWP benefits is available in the UWP Benefits Summary.

The successful candidate’s primary clinical responsibilities will focus on the neurosurgical management of patients with malignant brain tumors, including gliomas and metastatic brain tumors. The faculty member will participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning, clinical trials, tissue acquisition, and longitudinal neuro-oncology care.

The successful candidate will also have a central role in the stereotactic radiosurgery program, including patient selection, treatment planning, treatment delivery, follow-up, quality improvement, and program development in close partnership with radiation oncology and medical physics.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and sustain an independent, hypothesis-driven basic and/or translational laboratory research program relevant to glioma. Responsibilities will include securing extramural research support, publishing original research, mentoring trainees and research staff, and translating laboratory discoveries through tissue-based studies, therapeutic development, and early-phase clinical investigation. The position is intended to include substantial protected research effort, laboratory space, startup support, and access to institutional shared resources, subject to the final terms of appointment.

The faculty member will have an active programmatic role across UW Medicine, the Alvord Brain Tumor Center, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. The successful candidate will be expected to develop collaborative research projects, grants, clinical trials, and trainee-mentoring relationships with faculty in neuro-oncology, radiation oncology, neuropathology, cancer biology, immunology, and other relevant programs.

The successful candidate will participate in the teaching and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees and will contribute to clinical, translational, and basic science research activities relevant to neurological surgery and neuro-oncology. As part of the appointment, the successful candidate will be a faculty member of the University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Neurological Surgery.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative academic neurological surgery practice and work closely with multidisciplinary clinical and research teams across UW Medicine and affiliated institutions.
