14 month maternity cover

Averaging 23.3 hours per week working 10-hour shifts (7.30am-6.30pm with 1-hour unpaid lunch) (four days on, eight days off)

You will work as part of a rotational pod of three RVNs, providing year-round cover on a rolling pattern of four shifts on followed by eight shifts off. Pod members support one another by covering annual leave when required, with any additional shifts paid as overtime.

Be part of something bigger, there’s a career for everyone at the University of Edinburgh.

The Opportunity:

Our General Rotation positions are an excellent opportunity for RVNs looking to develop their careers within a world-class referral hospital. Working alongside specialist clinicians and highly experienced veterinary nurses at the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA), you will receive training across a range of services, building your skills and confidence in a supportive learning environment.

As part of the team, you will be involved in a diverse caseload of complex and rewarding referral cases, with a particular focus on the care and management of our ward-based patients. Every day offers the chance to learn something new while making a real difference to patient care.

The HfSA provides a 24/7 emergency and referral service and is proud of its friendly, collaborative culture and longstanding reputation for clinical excellence, research, and innovation. Our nursing team is at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to supporting your professional growth through outstanding education and development opportunities.

Whether you are newly qualified or bringing experience from another role, we welcome applications from enthusiastic RVNs who are keen to learn and grow.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Being an RCVS registered veterinary nurse is essential.
  • Excellent organisational and communications skills are essential.
  • Keen dedication to teaching the next generation of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses is essential.

Training & Support

We offer a focused training programme to help you get started in the role. You’ll normally start shadowing our friendly and experienced team during standard daytime hours (Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm) to build your confidence and skills.

As a world-leading research-intensive University, we are here to address tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.

About the Team

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (https://vet.ed.ac.uk/about/what-we-do) is a one-of-a-kind centre of excellence in clinical activity, teaching and research. Our purpose-built campus, set against the Pentland Hills Regional Park, is home to over 800 staff and a thriving student community (https://vet.ed.ac.uk/education).

The School comprises the Roslin Institute, three veterinary hospitals, a pathology unit, innovation centre and a range of research centres and services.

We represent one of the largest concentrations of animal science expertise in Europe, impacting local, regional, national and international communities in terms of economic growth, the provision of clinical services and the advancement of scientific knowledge.
