The Johns Hopkins University School of Education seeks candidates for a tenure-eligible Associate Professor in Community Practice, with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education (through grade 3). The position is intended to advance the translation of scientific, evidence-based methods into practice for teachers and community practitioners, with the goal of improving the quality of education for all students. The successful candidate will bring an established research program and a demonstrated record of leadership to this work, along with a sustained scholarly commitment to early childhood as a foundational period of human development. This position offers the opportunity to shape graduate education and lead partnerships that connect research to real-world practice in early learning, underserved, and urban communities across diverse local, national, and global contexts. Qualified candidates will be considered for eligibility for a new endowed chair, called the William and Sylvia Cohen Associate Professor in Community Practice.

Responsibilities:

CURRICULUM AND TEACHING

  • Evaluate, develop, and deliver curricula for JHU School of Education degree programs that translate advances in learning, technology, and instruction science into practice accessible to pre- and in-service teachers and community practitioners.
  • Mentor master's and doctoral degree candidates to deepen their understanding of early childhood as the critical period shaping a child's physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development, as well as language acquisition, and provide senior guidance on dissertation research in this area.
  • Engage in service to the department, school, and profession appropriate to rank.

Research and Evidence Building

  • Strengthen the evidence base on what makes educational programs and initiatives effective, with particular attention to early learners and underserved and urban populations.
  • Collaborate with, and where appropriate lead, experts in teaching and learning, brain and language development, and child development across Johns Hopkins University with a specific interest in early childhood development.
  • Collaborate with faculty across units and centers on interdisciplinary research and grant activity.
  • Hold a secondary affiliation with one or more of the School of Education’s five Research Centers: https://education.jhu.edu/faculty-research/centers-institutes/

Community and Partnership Engagement

  • Build and sustain partnerships with schools and communities that bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and everyday practice, working toward improved educational outcomes for students.
  • Work directly with community stakeholders to design and implement practical programs and technologies that support student performance and long-term outcomes and help secure the funding and institutional support these partnerships require.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Early Childhood Education, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.
  • An established, externally recognized research record in early childhood development, learning science, or evidence-based instructional practice, with a sustained publication history in peer-reviewed venues.
  • A record of successful university-level teaching and curriculum development, typically including prior experience at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent. We are willing to consider candidates currently at the advanced Asistant Professor level who would be eligible for hire at the Associate Professor level.
  • A demonstrated record of securing external funding to support research and program development.
  • Ability to translate research findings for practitioner and community audiences.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience designing or validating assessment instruments related to learning readiness or developmental outcomes.
  • A sustained track record of partnership work with schools, districts, or community organizations, particularly in urban or underserved settings.
  • A demonstrated record of mentoring graduate or doctoral students to successful completion, including dissertation chairing.
  • Interdisciplinary leadership experience, particularly with researchers in language development, human development, or public health.
  • Evidence of service and leadership within professional organizations or editorial boards.

The expected base pay salary range for this position is $123,002 - $179,905.
