Description

At the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group (WBG), you’ll join a diverse, global community working across cultures, disciplines, and borders to address the world’s most pressing development challenges. With 1.2 billion young people reaching working age in the decade ahead, the challenge of job creation has never been greater. Through partnerships across 145 countries and more than 182 offices worldwide, we work with governments, private sector, development partners and other stakeholders to invest in people, strengthen markets, and deliver scalable, data-driven solutions that generate more and better jobs and improve lives. In fiscal year 2026, IFC committed a record $105.6 billion to private companies and financial institutions in developing countries. For more information, visit www.ifc.org.

Join IFC's Manufacturing & Services (M&S) Africa team in Dakar and help bring private capital to industrial and manufacturing businesses, including chemicals and fertilizers, building materials, packaging, consumer goods, textiles, and services across West, Central and North Africa. You will work on real transactions from the outset, from originating opportunities to closing and supervising loan, equity and mezzanine investments. You will work with experienced teams in the region and in Washington, DC, gain exposure to clients and industry leaders, and build a career within one of the largest development finance institutions in the world. Your work will be measured by both the quality of investments you execute and their development impact.

Duties and accountabilities:

The Associate Investment Officer will be based in Dakar and report to the Manager of the Manufacturing unit within the M&S Africa Department. Working with colleagues in the region and in Washington, DC, the incumbent will:

  • Originate and develop the pipeline. Identify and screen potential clients and investment opportunities in the assigned sectors and countries, based on market potential, financial strength, sponsor quality and strategic fit, and build relationships with private sector clients, public sector counterparts and development partners.
  • Appraise opportunities. Assess investment opportunities with a strong focus on credit quality and development impact, and prepare clear recommendations for IFC management.
  • Execute transactions. Contribute to and, with increasing independence, lead the execution of loan, equity and mezzanine financings: processing mandates, carrying out due diligence, structuring, negotiating terms and documentation, arranging syndications, and obtaining internal approvals.
  • Manage risk with specialists. Work with IFC's environmental, social, technical, legal, insurance and governance specialists to identify and mitigate project risks, and promote IFC's sustainability and advisory offerings to clients.
  • Supervise the portfolio. Monitor client compliance with investment agreements, prepare timely supervision reports, flag early warning signs, and help formulate and implement work-out, restructuring or rescheduling strategies where needed.
  • Contribute to strategy and client service. Support the development and implementation of sector and country strategies and deliver high-quality service to clients throughout the project cycle, from sourcing to supervision.

Selection Criteria

  • Education: MBA, Master's degree in Business and/or Finance.
  • Experience: At least 4-7 years of relevant experience in investment or corporate banking, project or structured finance, private equity, or an international or development finance institution, with exposure to emerging markets.
  • Transaction track record: Demonstrated experience in sourcing, structuring, negotiating and closing investments (debt, equity or both), including credit analysis and financial modeling.
  • Judgment and analytical skills: Sound business and credit judgment, including the ability to assess sponsors, partners and risk and to structure financial instruments.
  • Client and stakeholder engagement: Ability to build credible relationships with clients and partners and to engage with senior management and, with support, government officials.
  • Language: Excellent written and spoken English. Working proficiency in French is strongly preferred; fluency in French is strongly preferred given the Dakar location and francophone portfolio.
  • Working style: Ability to work independently and in multicultural teams, deliver under pressure, and travel frequently within the region.

Desirable:

  • Experience in Africa, particularly West Africa or francophone markets.
  • Experience in investing across manufacturing, services.
  • Experience with syndications, co-financing or blended finance.
  • Experience mentoring junior colleagues or analysts.
  • Ability to use commercially available LLM tools like Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot for research, analysis, and drafting in Investment & Upstream, validate outputs against primary sources, and remain accountable for recommendations.

As the World Bank Group continues to evolve, we value candidates who:

  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively across teams, disciplines, cultures, and institutional boundaries.
  • Responsibly leverage digital and AI-enabled tools to enhance productivity, learning, and decision-making.
  • Bring experience working in fragile, conflict-affected, and violent (FCV) contexts and are encouraged to highlight relevant experience in their application materials, where applicable.

WBG Culture Attributes:

  1. Sense of urgency: Anticipate and quickly respond to the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  2. Thoughtful risk-taking: Challenge the status quo and push boundaries to achieve greater impact.
  3. Empowerment and accountability: Empower yourself and others to act and hold each other accountable for results.
