About the Ph.D. Programs at the CUNY Graduate Center
The Ph.D. programs at the CUNY Graduate Center follow a consortium structure. Each program features a small cohort of central-line CUNY faculty members based at the Graduate Center who teach full-time in the program, and a much larger group of consortial faculty members who teach and advise students at the Graduate Center while holding primary appointments at other CUNY colleges. This consortium arrangement provides our students with unparalleled breadth and depth of coverage across fields and approaches to scholarship.
The Ph.D./M.A. Program in Political Science comprises a community of scholars dedicated to the tasks of acquiring, expanding, and transmitting reliable knowledge about political phenomena. The program is internationally recognized for its strengths in five research fields: American politics; comparative politics; international relations; political theory; and public policy.
The Ph.D. Program in Sociology develops sociologists with broad theoretical foundations and rigorous methodological training, including qualitative, quantitative, spatial, and computational methods. The program is internationally recognized for its strengths in seven research fields: crime, law, and society; demography and population health; gender, sexuality, and family; labor, work, and organizations; race, ethnicity, and immigration; urban sociology and the city; social inequality and public policy.
The Ph.D. Programs in Political Science and Sociology are independent doctoral programs, but several faculty members have held joint appointments over the years. We are now seeking a joint appointee to advance quantitative methods in both programs.
