We are looking for a project assistant to join our team, working with Electrochemical Sensing for Neurotransmitter Detection.
About us
This position is based at the Chemistry and LIFE Science departments at Chalmers University of Technology, in the research groups of Ann-Sofie Cans and Ines Weber. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together expertise in nanoscience, analytical chemistry, and biomedical sensing.
Job Description
Neurotransmitters (NTs) are chemical messengers that control brain function and play a key role in health conditions such as addiction, depression and neurodegeneration. Measuring them provides critical insight into how the brain works. Electrochemical sensors are among the most promising tools for this purpose, but existing sensors are typically limited to detecting only one neurotransmitter. The goal of this project is to nanoengineer multianalyte electrochemical sensors capable of tracking the dynamic interplay of several NTs simultaneously, with particular focus on signalling systems dysregulated in addiction. We combine approaches in nanomaterial engineering with biorecognition-based sensing using enzymes and aptamers to achieve this goal.
As a project assistant, you will work on the development of multianalyte electrochemical sensors for neurotransmitter detection. You will be part of an active, cross-disciplinary research environment and contribute directly to experimental work.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Fabricate and optimise nanoscale sensing materials and integrate them with enzyme and aptamer-based sensing
- Conduct neurotransmitter measurements and interpret experimental data
- Collaborate with researchers within the research groups and participate in scientific discussions
- Document your work carefully and contribute to scientific reporting
Qualifications
We are looking for an engaged and technically curious person with a strong interest in nanomaterials, electrochemistry, and sensing for biomedical applications.
Required qualifications
- A master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, nanoscience, or a closely related field (completed)
- Strong analytical thinking and the ability to work independently and systematically
- Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Meritorious experience
- Hands-on experience with electrochemical methods (e.g. cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, amperometry)
- Experience with nanomaterial synthesis and characterisation techniques (e.g. SEM, TEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy)
- Familiarity with biosensor design or surface functionalisation strategies
- Experience with carbon-based nanomaterials or neurotransmitter sensing
We value curiosity and a collaborative attitude at least as highly as specific technical background.
Contract terms
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment running from 11 January 2027 to 17 December 2027. The position is regulated according to Chalmers' general employment conditions.
