Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

This internship is located in the UNDRR Office for Northeast Asia and Global Education and Training Institute (ONEA & GETI) based in Incheon, Republic of Korea. The internship is full time and in-person, and the Intern reports to Programme Management Officer(s) of the office.

As a Headquarter Section, UNDRR GETI was established in 2010 with the global mandate to develop a new cadre of professionals in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation to build disaster resilient societies. It also serves as the global secretariat of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) supporting local governments in taking a long-term and continuous approach to resilience investments. UNDRR GETI also oversees UNDRR’s toolkits and capacity development programmes on urban resilience, contributing to the achievement of MCR2030 and the localization of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The internship will support UNDRR GETI in delivering the training/capacity development service and MCR2030, contributing directly to the UNDRR Strategic Objective 2: Inclusive and interconnected locally-led disaster risk governance strengthens disaster risk management. Tasks will include:

  • Collect data, analyze inputs, and prepare reports to capture the achievement of MCR2030 Resilience Hubs in advancing locally-led DRR and peer-to-peer support;
  • Perform internet- and interview-based research and collect information on good practices and case studies on urban disaster and climate resilience, application of Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities, urban floods, etc., for use as training materials and web publishing;
  • Support the preparation, coordination and delivery of capacity development training workshops for government officials and partners;
  • Support office’s communication, development of relevant publications and write-up of news article and quarterly newsletter and other communications and advocacy products;
  • Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, concept notes, reports, and presentations;
  • Collect disaggregated data on training participants, analyze training evaluation survey and prepare training reports;
  • Assist in the development, maintenance and update of UNDRR's urban disaster resilience toolkits including the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities, its addenda and all accompanying Excel Tools;
  • Other tasks as assigned
