Title: Asst Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Art and Architecture

Executive Area: Academic Affairs

College/School/MBU: Humanities & Fine Arts

Department: History of Art & Architecture

Work Location: Amherst

Schedule: full time

Work Arrangement: Onsite

Job Summary

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a historian of ancient art and/or architecture whose research focuses on the ancient Mediterranean, broadly conceived. We welcome scholars working on ancient Greece and/or Rome whose approaches extend beyond traditional geographic and cultural frameworks to consider the interconnected visual cultures of the ancient world. Work that brings new methodologies or perspectives to ancient visual and material culture is especially encouraged. We invite research engaging questions of cultural heritage, cultural encounter, and the relationships among ancient Mediterranean societies and their wider networks.

This is a full-time nine-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank to begin September 1, 2027.

Essential Functions

The candidate would be expected to contribute to the department’s General Education surveys in the history of architecture and in the history of art before 1600, and to develop a new, large-enrollment course that introduces the history of art through a specific theme or a broad historical survey. The candidate will also be expected to devise seminars for MA students.

We seek a specialist prepared to utilize the rich resources in museum collections available in New England, New York, and Boston, but who also can teach more broadly over regions, periods, cultures, and materials. The ideal candidate would also contribute to our department’s growing strength in transregional and transcultural approaches and foster important interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments across campus and in the Five Colleges.

Course load is two courses per semester plus contributions to team-taught surveys. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain a robust research profile and be responsible for various service commitments to the Department, College, and University consistent with their faculty rank.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in the history of art and architecture or a related discipline required by time of appointment, with demonstrated professional capabilities and ambitions.

Salary Information

The University expects to pay within an approximate range between $79,350 and $124,414 for this position. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position is a 9-month academic year appointment at 100% full-time equivalency with full benefits.

Please note: The low end of this range is based on the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA. The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.

Special Instructions for Applicants

Along with the application, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the contact information for three references who are willing to submit a letter of reference at the short-list finalist stage.

Address your cover letter to the Chair of the Search Committee discussing your interest in the position, ability to contribute meaningfully to the present and future activities of the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, and how your work as a scholar, teacher, academic citizen and public servant would further the university’s values and goals as outlined in the university’s strategic plan. You can find these values and goals in our strategic plan here: https://www.umass.edu/strategicplan/strategic-plan.

Applicants must apply by the priority deadline of November 29, 2026 to ensure full consideration. The position will remain posted until filled but applications received after the priority deadline may not be reviewed.

This position will remain open for the time period required by any applicable collective bargaining agreement and will continue until a suitable candidate pool is identified. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early.
