About the role

A Research Associate post is available in the Local Health and Global Profits consortium. This grant is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is one of the four themes within the Population Health Improvement Network. You will be joining a friendly and dynamic team of multidisciplinary researchers working at the cutting edge of public health research on the commercial determinants of health. The role will be based within the Centre for 21st Century Public Health at the University of Bath.

The post holder will deliver applied public health policy research, with a focus on the commercial determinants of health, using qualitative and/or mixed methods, specifically:

  • Conducting literature reviews, grey literature reviews and database searches
  • Using evidence to prepare policy briefs
  • Ensuring high-quality data: preparing reference databases and double coding
  • Supporting public engagement activities
  • Organising and conducting meetings with research partners
  • Supporting the preparation and delivery of workshops and focus groups
  • Translating research findings into accessible outputs for different audiences.

The role will be varied, providing many opportunities to contribute to research activities, develop skills in participatory public health methods, as well as wider training.

As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

About you

In addition to a relevant PhD and research background that complements the aims of the LHGP research consortium, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in applied public health policy research, including collating and evaluating existing tools, grey literature reviews, and case study evaluations using qualitative or mixed methods
  • Experience in delivering workshops or focus groups, or similar relevant experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and a strong team work ethic.

Occasional travel in the UK and internationally may be required.

The postholder must have no previous work for or with the tobacco industry or organisations or individuals financially linked to the tobacco industry. To avoid potential conflicts of interests and to ensure compliance with Article 5.3 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, applicants are therefore asked to declare any current or previous occupational activity with any tobacco, e-cigarette, e-liquid or vaping company or those receiving financial contributions from these industries, whether gainful or not.

In line with the Centre for 21st Century Public Health’s wider work, applicants are also asked to declare current or previous links (personal financial links, or links via close personal relationships) to the following industries: ultra-processed foods, fossil fuels, alcohol, gambling, cannabis, pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, chemicals, extractive (e.g. mineral and metal mining).

Further information

The role is offered full time (36.5 hours per week) on a fixed term basis with an expected start date of early January 2027.
