The emphasis is on using well-founded research to inform instructional practices and decision-making. This course is designed to promote reflective thinking about key topics in Special Education that educators must conceptualize from both theoretical and practical perspectives. It is intended to provide students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable evidence-based understanding of what is involved in working with exceptional learners across a variety of settings, but primarily in an inclusive classroom situation. Focus is placed on curriculum being flexible in responding to diversity, so that teachers are guided to make appropriate accommodations and modified expectations for the various categories of exceptionality. Since characteristics of special needs and second language learners are often inter-related, ESL support will also be addressed.\n \nEstimated TA support: none\nEstimated course enrolment: 30 \nClass schedule: Thu 13:30 - 16:30\nSessional dates of appointment: Winter 2021-01-01 - 2021-04-30\nAppointment percentage: 100\nSalary:CUPE3902 Unit 3 Salaries. The rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.</p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Minimum Qualifications:</strong>\n1-Doctorate degree or equivalent in psychology, human development, special education or a related field; </p>\n\n\n<p>2-Expertise in content areas in special education and adaptive instruction; </p>\n\n\n<p>3-Expertise in teaching at University level. </p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong>\n1-Individuals with demonstrated expertise with related course content and prior graduate teaching; </p>\n\n\n<p>2-Demonstrated scholarship in the area of the course topic; </p>\n\n\n<p>3-Ability to collaborate with experienced teachers and community members; </p>\n\n\n<p>4-Proir experience teaching flex-mode courses preferred.</p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Description of duties:</strong>\n1) Teach a minimum of 36 hours.\n2) Prepare teaching resources for each class and provide relevant materials.\n3) Assess and evaluate students' work and provide a final course grade according to OISE/UT grading practices.\n4) Be available for informal meetings/communications with students as necessary.</p>\n\n\n<p>There is a possibility that part or all of a course offered during Fall, Winter or Year may require online teaching and timetable adjustments, given community health considerations related to the pandemic.
