The course commences with a review of fundamental principles in covalent bonding to understand the structure and shape of organic molecules; the concepts of molecular conformation, as well as the \"handedness\" of shape, are introduced. The relationship between the structure of organic molecules and their reactivity is then presented. This relationship will be illustrated by examining the mechanisms by which the organic chemistry of alkenes, alkyl halides and alcohols takes place. The roles of acid/base chemistry in these reactions is presented throughout.</p>\n\n\n<p>Estimated Enrolment: 1800 students</p>\n\n\n<p>Estimated TA Support: 300 TA hours</p>\n\n\n<p>Class Schedule: Online office hours to be held three times a week, at a convenient time for both instructor and students, for four weeks during the months of March and April 2021. *Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, this course may be delivered in-person, remotely/online, or by a combination of delivery methods as determined by the Faculty or Department at a later date.</p>\n\n\n<p>Sessional Date of Appointment: January 1, 2021 to April 30, 2021 (0.25 FCE)</p>\n\n\n<p>Salary: $4,244.83 for Sessional Lecturer I; $4,434.63 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $4,542.79 for Sessional Lecturer II; $4,650.95 for Sessional Lecturer III, inclusive of vacation pay, or possibly higher commensurate with experience.</p>\n\n\n<p>Please note that should the rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.</p>\n\n\n<p>\nQualifications: A PhD in organic chemistry or a closely related field is required. Experience lecturing and/or coordinating laboratories in general or physical chemistry at the university level will be preferred.</p>\n\n\n<p>Brief Description of Duties: The Department of Chemistry requires a sessional lecturer to develop asynchronous online lecture content (12 hours) and to hold online office hours in CHM136H1 (Introductory Organic Chemistry I) during the 2021 Winter session. The successful applicant will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all of the attendant organizational issues of class preparation, supervising of tutors, setting and supervising exams, final course marks, course evaluations, holding office hours, and so forth.
