Candidates will also have the potential for sustaining a funded research programme at the University of Aberdeen. Candidates will also be expected to develop into a teaching and research tenured position subject to performance against a quality threshold.</p>\n<p>To complete our recruitment phase in Biological Sciences we are looking to appoint a single Academic Fellowship (Research) in the area of soil/ plant science. The applicant could have expertise in soil science, plant science or the interface between these disciplines. Biological, microbial, chemical, physical, empirical and modelling themes will be considered. The successful applicant will develop into a tenured track (Teaching and Research) post following successful completion of probation. Candidates are not expected to develop a single research theme instead they will be required to explain and justify their research ambitions and how these will be realised. Candidates should have a good working knowledge of the UK funding landscape.</p>\n<p>Applicants are encouraged to review the research within the School (<a data-mz=\"\" href=\"https://www.abdn.ac.uk/sbs\" rel=\"no-follow\">www.abdn.ac.uk/sbs</a>) and to explain how their research ambitions connect to the School with specific reference to soil/ plant sciences. Successful candidates will be able to articulate these visions in the context of the current funding landscape. They should also be able to develop and enhance networks to deliver the highest quality research through the most effective funding system. </p>\n<p>The fellowships will allow dedication of time for research and the development of research interests; while gaining access to our cutting-edge facilities.</p>\n<p>For appointments at Research Fellow, Grade 7, salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7 salary scale (£41,526 - £49,552 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.</p>\n<p>For appointments at Senior Research Fellow, Grade 8, salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 8 salary scale (£52,559 - £59,135 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.</p>\n<p>Applicants are invited from candidates wishing to consider flexible working. </p>\n<p>Should you require a visa to undertake paid employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum points criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship and Tier 2 visa. The minimum salary threshold to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship for this post is £32,000 per annum. It was formed in the merging of two colleges, King’s and Marischal, in 1860.</p><p>King’s College was founded in 1495 by William Elphinstone, the then Bishop of Aberdeen, who used the great European universities of Paris and Bologna as his model.</p><p> </p><p>With just 36 staff and students when it first opened, King’s was dedicated to training teachers, doctors, lawyers and the clergy who would serve northern Scotland and the Scottish monarchy. It offered studies in arts, theology and the law, and its position of chair of medicine, established in 1497, was the first to be created in the English-speaking world.</p><p> </p><p>Marischal College meanwhile was opened in 1593, in the New Town of Aberdeen, by the fourth Earl Marischal.</p><p>The two colleges merged and for a time King’s focused on arts and divinity while Marischal focused on law and medicine.</p><p> </p><p>The first women were admitted as students in 1894, with four women graduating in arts in 1898. By 1899, women were a quarter of their faculty.</p><p>Current students of the university number around 14,000 and prominent alumni include former Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, former Cabinet Office Minister Tessa Jowell, two judges of the supreme court of Scotland and a number of university vice-chancellors.</p><p> </p><p>Health and healthcare have long been a research priority for Aberdeen, with the region boasting the highest concentration of health and life scientists in Europe.
