Overall, the suitable scientific backgrounds and fields include but are not limited to Infectious diseases, Experimental evolution, Microbiology, Sociology, Evolutionary biology and Bioinformatics. Together we will do field, social, laboratory as well as computational integrative science to understand AMR. If you are motivated to work in a multidisciplinary environment and can contribute to the research mission of the unit, do not hesitate to apply even if your background is not directly in the listed areas. Fluency in English and excellent writing skills are essential.
\n\n\n
The successful candidates will become part of a multidisciplinary team. Our work is based on clinical work with participants and their samples, sampling of different environments, bacterial isolation and culturing together with genetic, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic and bioinformatic analyses.
\n\n\n
We now seek postdoctoral AMR researchers with experience in AMR work in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology laboratory. The work will mainly take place in Finland but may include field work in our study sites in Asia and Africa. Therefore, experience in field work and language skills (particularly French) are advantageous but not obligatory. Clinical positions are based at Anu Kantele’s group in the Faculty of Medicine and environmental positions at Marko Virta’s group at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry but work will include a close collaboration between the groups of the entire CoE.
\n\n\n
Theme 2 Sociology (up to 2 positions)
\n\n\n
The sociology research group based at the University of Helsinki, Department of Social Sciences in Sociology and under the Centre for the Social study of Microbes led by Salla Sariola, will investigate the role of human activities in the development and spread of resistance.
\n\n\n
Various sociological enquiries in connection with the microbiological data collection will be conducted in order to investigate the contribution of ‘the social’ in generating selection pressures as well as identifying practises that potentially contribute to the spread of and colonisation by AMR. The enquiry will be conducted in three tasks at three levels: Task 1. Global development indicators that may predict AMR spread. Task 2. Community level (village, neighbourhood etc) surveys. Task 3. Ethnography of practises at village and neighbourhood level.
\n\n\n
We seek candidates with skills in quantitative and/or qualitative methods. The qualitative tasks will require expertise and experience in the use of ethnographic methods (e.g. interviews, participant observation and focus groups) in low-income settings. An ideal candidate should have worked on antimicrobial resistance in the past, or in adjacent fields such as human or animal health and environment. French language is an asset. Background in medical anthropology, development studies, sociology, science and technology studies or other relevant fields would be eligible.
\n\n\n
Theme 3 Experimental evolution and data science (up to 4 positions)
\n\n\n
In this theme we will use experimental model systems (e.g. synthetic bacterial communities) combined with various data analysis methods (e.g. evolutionary theory based inference, machine learning) to study how AMR develops in the community context and the related eco-evolutionary dynamics of community resilience against stressors. This theme is at the interface of microbial evolution, eco-evolutionary theory and data science.
\n\n\n
We aim to recruit postdoctoral researchers with a background either A) in microbiology, experimental evolution or community ecology (experience in working with bacterial model systems is beneficial). All candidates are required to have a burning interest in evolution.
