The successful candidate will join a team of research advisers within the NIHR Research Design Service, which includes statisticians, health economists, qualitative methodologists, and behavioural scientists. Together, these staff provide specialist advice and guidance on the use of appropriate research methods and study designs to those targeting funding from the NIHR and other national peer-reviewed funding schemes. You will be encouraged to build a portfolio of applied healthcare or methodological research, working with teams across and beyond our multidisciplinary department to provide statistical expertise for research conducted within the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and KCL, NIHR Applied Research Collaboration, and King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"> </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><strong>About us:</strong> NIHR RDS London is part of a national service that supports researchers to develop their innovative research ideas into high quality research proposals to attract funding. Further information on RDS London can be found here. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"> </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The Unit of Medical Statistics (UMS) has substantial expertise in early/late phase clinical trials, epidemiological studies, registers, and databases and has specific interests in prognostic models, early phase trial design, and biomarkers enrichment/prediction. The Unit comprises three Readers and one Senior Lecturer in medical statistics who will provide co-supervision and mentorship for the post holder. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"> </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">This post will be offered on an a fixed term contract until 30 Sep 2023 in the first instance. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent / 35 hours per week</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"> </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">Key responsibilities</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• With support from colleagues, provide specialist advice and guidance based on your knowledge of a range of study designs and research methods to researchers developing funding applications. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• Carry out an appraisal of a research proposal and suggest a coherent plan of action to improve its overall quality and hence likelihood of success in attracting funding. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• Provide advice on a range of NIHR and other national peer-reviewed funding schemes, helping clients to target funding applications effectively. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• Provide ongoing support, acting as a case manager for your own clients, facilitating input from other methodologists (including health economists, qualitative methodologists, and behavioural scientists) within RDS, as appropriate. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• Assist with the design and development of materials for workshops and webinars for RDS London clients. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• Assist with the organisation and delivery of some RDS London outreach and promotional events e.g., the development of advice-giving fora, workshops and information events for RDS London clients. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">• Build collaborations with internal and external research teams to improve the quality of research funding applications and form relationships for future collaboration. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"> </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><em>The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.</em> </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">Skills, knowledge, and experience </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><strong>Essential criteria </strong></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">1. PhD in applied statistics or extensive equivalent research experience </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">2. Skills in applying statistical knowledge in the design and analysis of applied healthcare research studies, including clinical trials </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">3. Wide ranging practical involvement in the design and analysis of healthcare research studies, including randomised controlled trials. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">4. Excellent critical appraisal skills, for example in reviewing research proposals or acting as a peer reviewer for journals, with ability to identify and resolve issues using specialist knowledge and give detailed constructive feedback. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">5. Experience in developing research proposals for submission to funding bodies </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">6. Evidence of collaborative working in the field of medical statistics, clinical trials, including a track record of high-quality, peer-reviewed publications </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">7.
