The MRC LEC mission is to promote human health using lifecourse epidemiological methods, integrating observational evidence, understanding of mechanism and implementation of intervention studies.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The MRC LEC, University of Southampton, is at the international forefront of musculoskeletal epidemiology, with full MRC funding secured 2021 to 2026. It has an internationally competitive track record in both observational and intervention studies, and well-established links with the University's Institute of Developmental Science, NIHR Nutrition Biomedical Research Centre and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with the scientific coordination and management of the MRC National Musculoskeletal Network. Led by Professor Cyrus Cooper and Professor Nicholas Harvey at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre, University of Southampton, the network comprises an initial collaboration between key MRC investments: MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre (LEC); MRC-Versus Arthritis Centre for Integrated Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA); MRC-Versus Arthritis Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research (CMAR); MRC Epidemiology Unit; MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing; and MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit, across the Universities of Southampton, Sheffield, Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, Cambridge and UCL.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">This network will identify key tractable research priorities and coordinate an ongoing programme of innovative, interdisciplinary, collaborative studies to identify, develop and translate findings from discovery science to clinical impact. It will provide support for Early Career Researchers to build research capacity and ensure longevity to current UKRI investments. Crucially the network will contribute to delivering the government “Grand Challenge” target of 5 more years of independent living by 2035, by identifying approaches to maintain mobility in old age.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The MRC LEC offers extensive opportunities for building both specific and generic research and interpersonal skills, across the design and conduct of epidemiological investigations, preparation of research papers, and presentation of findings at national and international conferences, together with statistical analysis skills. The post-holder will also have the opportunity to assist with other scientific studies undertaken through the MRC LEC, and to develop an area of personal research interest.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">Although a PhD is not essential, the successful applicant will have demonstrated a strong track record in epidemiology/ biomedical sciences, including an honours degree, excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, and the ability to work successfully as part of a close-knit team. Where the successful applicant does not already have a PhD, there may be potential for development of a PhD proposal with the University of Southampton. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">This post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis, starting as soon as possible. The appointment is for one year in the first instance with the possibility of extension for a further year contingent on continued availability of funding and a satisfactory performance review.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><em>*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.
