From the inception of the University in 1992, the School has gone from strength to strength and has developed a strong international and national reputation for its creative, industry-engaged teaching and research. For more information please <a data-mz=\"\" href=\"https://www.herts.ac.uk/study/schools-of-study/physics-engineering-and-computer-science\" rel=\"no-follow\" target=\"_blank\">visit here.</a></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">This post is created as a result of the current postholder taking up the position of Dean of School.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>Main duties and responsibilities</b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The role of Deputy Dean of School is to support the Dean in providing academic leadership and management of the School. The Deputy Dean, working closely with the Heads of Department and Associated Deans of School will support the Dean in the development of strategic plans to achieve the highest standards of learning and teaching, research, knowledge transfer, scholarship and student experience within the subjects or disciplines for which the School is responsible for. The Deputy Dean will then take primary responsibility for the leading the operationalisation of the School’s strategic plans.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The Deputy Dean will take Executive oversight responsibility for particular functions and lead elements of the School's work. The specific functions will be subject to discussion, change and agreement between the Deputy Dean and Dean of School, and will include elements of the following core operational activities of the School:</p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Marketing and communications,</li>\n<li>Recruitment of staff and students, including both Home and International students</li>\n<li>Engagement with school alumni,</li>\n<li>Space allocation, and timetabling, alongside maintaining effective use of Laboratories and School owned learning spaces on and off campus, including the Bayfordbury campus and observatories</li>\n<li>Oversight of degree apprenticeship provision and compliance</li>\n<li>School support activities</li>\n</ul>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">In the 2023/24 Academic year a significant focus for the Deputy Dean will be to support the move and ensure business continuity as we move into our new purpose £90M new building facility.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The Deputy Dean will make an impactful and positive contribution to the Senior Leadership Team of the School and will achieve this using the University values of Friendly, Ambitious, Collegiate, Enterprising and Student Focused. When and where requested by the Dean or University, the Deputy Dean will act as Pro-Dean.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>Skills and experience required</b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">You will have proven expertise in academic studies in education, and a demonstrable track record of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, with the ability to use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods. You will have the ability to contribute to the design of engaging and intellectually stimulating modules, and a motivated approach towards your work and the work of the School.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">You will also have excellent communication skills and the ability to form good working relationships on an internal and external basis. You will be committed to the ongoing development of teaching and learning skills, in particular the growing use of technology in relation to blended learning activities and have good self-management and time management skills.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">Ideally you will also have an established or emerging research profile in an area of academic study relevant to the school, and experience of programme leadership and/or line management.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>Qualifications required</b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">You will have an undergraduate degree in a subject relevant to the disciplines within the School alongside a doctorate in a relevant subject, or evidence of substantial industrial or academic experience within a relevant subject. You will be a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy) and will be committed to becoming a Senior Fellow or Principal of Advance HE within your first 2 years in post.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><i>Please view the job description and person specification for a full list of the duties and essential criteria.
