Luomus invites applications for the permanent position of <b>Curator in Vascular Plants </b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The appointment will begin on 1 February 2024 at the earliest or as agreed. The position will be instated in the Vascular Plants Team of the Botany and Mycology Unit of Luomus and the curator will contribute to the functions of Luomus’s research programmes. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>About the position </b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">We are seeking a plant systematist/taxonomist/conservation biologist who will conduct high quality collection-based research on vascular plants. A successful candidate is familiar with key scientific methodologies and herbarium techniques and may be able to conduct independent research. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The curator will be holding the key responsibility of curation of the herbarium of vascular plants jointly with the senior curator and other herbarium personnel and to contribute to development of the collection management system and the curation the living collections of the two botanic gardens in the unit. The curator will also teach in university courses (max. 5% of worktime) including supervision of MSc students. Supervision of PhD students, in turn, is regarded as part of research work. The curator's teaching is intended to be directed to the teaching of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, when appropriate. The curator is expected to be active in obtaining external funding and building a research group and act as a supervisor for the members of his/her/their research group. The curator will participate in the museum’s international collaboration and community engagement in the field. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>The Vascular Plants Team</b> is responsible for the herbarium collections of vascular plants and algae (c. 1,8 million specimens), curation of living plant collections at Kaisaniemi and Kumpula Botanic gardens (c. 7000 accessions), seed bank of endangered species and the global seed exchange between botanic gardens. Moreover, the team updates the database of herbarium and living plants collections, participates in the development and maintenance of the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility, and carries out scientific research on vascular plants. Team members also take part in teaching in university courses. The team has twelve permanent employees, five of which are in academic positions. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>Qualifications </b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the curator shall hold a doctoral degree and have experience of scientific research work and have teaching skills necessary for the position. The position of curator shall require the ability to lead a research group and acquire external research funding. When selecting the appointee, scholarly work outside Finland and evidence of international cooperation shall be given particular consideration. The degree requirements must be met by the end of the application deadline. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">Experience in working with scientific collections, development of collection infrastructure such as collection management systems, participation in the development of university teaching and supervision, good academic skills, and an inclination to team work as well as experience of societal interaction are considered as important assets. The main focus of the task is on curation of the collections. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good skills in Finnish and English. The official languages of the University of Helsinki are Finnish and Swedish but foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. </p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>What do we offer? </b></p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The position is permanent, including a trial period of 6 months. The curator's salary will be based on level 6 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
