The researcher will be employed for 24 months at the University of Helsinki starting between January–April 2024. The position is located at LUOMUS.
\n\n\n
About the position
\n\n\n
The postdoctoral researcher will work for the project Linking aquatic and terrestrial sister orders of insects: a multidisciplinary approach to diversification on two sides of the surface under the supervision of Maria Heikkilä.
\n\n\n
The project focuses on the evolutionary history of Amphiesmenoptera i.e., Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) and their sister order, Trichoptera (caddisflies). During the project extensive morphological and genomic data will be assembled to study their evolutionary history. Fossil data will be used to obtain a time frame for divergence events. The project explores how these two insect orders with very different life histories have been affected by events in the history of Earth.
\n\n\n
The main task of the postdoctoral researcher to be recruited will be to gather large morphological datasets for fossil and extant Amphiesmenoptera, a contribution that is likely to have wide and long-lasting impact on the study of insect phylogeny and evolution. The research is based on material in collection holding institutions to which research visits will be made when necessary.
\n\n\n
Together with project collaborators, the postdoctoral researcher will take part in advancing knowledge on divergence time estimation methods using large morphological datasets and fossils, the inference of a robust time-calibrated phylogeny, and explore why some groups of Lepidoptera and Trichoptera are more diverse than others. The researcher will participate in data analysis and writing of research articles.
\n\n\n
The project is done in collaboration with an excellent team, which includes international leaders on Lepidoptera and Trichoptera phylogeny, and on insect fossils, based at research institutes in Finland, China, U.S.A., Sweden, and Germany, guaranteeing a diverse working environment and different perspectives on the research questions. There is also an opportunity to supervise MSc students. No more than 5 % of annual working time is used for teaching, and it is recommended that teaching is linked to the individual’s own research interest where possible.
\n\n\n
Selection criteria
\n\n\n
The appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher shall hold:
\n\n\n
\n
a doctoral degree
\n
ability and motivation to perform the work, as demonstrated in previous positions and by published (or accepted) scientific articles
\n
experience in insect or invertebrate morphology
\n
previous work in the field of entomology or palaeoentomology is highly regarded
\n
excellent communication skills in English
\n
\n\n\n
The degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment.
\n\n\n
What do we offer?
\n\n\n
The salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities.
