IndEcol is a well-known research group with an international leading role in the field of environmental sustainability analysis and climate change mitigation strategies. IndEcol currently consists of about 80 employees in scientific positions and features publications of scientific articles in top-ranked journals, direct contributions to assessment reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and leading roles in several large-scale projects and initiatives at a national and European level.
\n\n\n
The agricultural and food systems need to develop towards more sustainable practices that can reconcile production with reductions in GHG emissions, land use optimization, and nature conservation. Examples include: i) better understanding of food production systems, both in terms of agricultural management practices, logistics, and distribution, to identify improvement strategies; ii) disentangle the main environmental implications for ecosystems and human health of gradual transitions to sustainable and healthy diets; iii) explore multifunctional landscape management strategies to secure productivity and ecosystem services, while increasing carbon content in vegetation and soils; iv) innovative solutions to use agricultural residues and biochar to maximize cascading uses of materials, nutrient recycling, and negative emissions in a circular (bio-)economy context. In order to secure a sustainable transition, there is an evident need for a better quantification of the environmental implications of novel approaches in the agri-food systems and discern the interlinkages of the land-climate-food nexus to guide future societal and technological developments.
\n\n\n
We seek two candidates that are strongly motivated to study the interactions across space and time between climate change mitigation, sustainable land and resource management, and agricultural systems. The main objective is to improve existing methods of environmental sustainability analysis (mostly for climate change, nutrients, sustainable production and consumption) and apply them to case studies that are relevant for the transition to a more sustainable agricultural system. The candidates will perform both methodological and applied research, and will have the opportunity to attend a PhD programme with access to the most up-to-date approaches in Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), interact with the major global experts in the field, and collaborate with national and international industries. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, we deem interest and ability to explore new fields and sub-fields important.
\n\n\n
Your immediate leader is Prof. Francesco Cherubini
\n\n\n
Duties of the position
\n\n\n
\n
Perform and advance climate impact analysis with up-to-date methods and metrics.
