After the Wei and Jin dynasties, the Apocryphal Literature were repeatedly banned by the authorities, and these documents were scattered and lost. Nevertheless, the concepts, discourses, symbols and knowledge systems in the apocryphal texts are significant in the study of Chinese society, politics, culture, thoughts, science and technology, and religions from the ancient times to the Qin and Han dynasties, thus a major project funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China (20&ZD226) is currently conducting on the collation of lost documents, exploration of their origins, and annotation of the texts. At present, a considerable amount of historical materials of science and technology and relevant conceptions have been found in the apocryphal documents, including astronomy, calendar, medicine, geography, agriculture, etc., which require well trained experts in both scientific and technological history and philology to conduct in-depth sorting and interdisciplinary research.
\n\n\n
Project 2. Study on the Astrological Canon of the Kaiyuan Reign of the Tang.
\n\n\n
The Astrological Canon of the Kaiyuan Reign of the Tang was written between 718 and 726 AD, by Gautama Siddha, a Buddhist monk of Indian descent in the Tang Dynasty. It contains a large number of astrological and calendar data and missing parts of the Apocryphal Literature before the Tang Dynasty, which is of great value in the study of Chinese astrology and apocryphal texts. The book was lost after the Tang Dynasty. Important editions accessible now are hand copies in the Ming and Qing dynasties and a woodcut edition in the Qing Dynasty, which belong to two or three textual traditions. There may be different inscriptions among these editions. The book is highly valuable in the study of apocryphal texts, and requires well trained experts in both scientific and technological history and philology to carry out in-depth sorting and interdisciplinary research.
\n\n\n
Joint Supervisors:
\n\n\n
Zongli Lu is the Master of Ling College and Adjunct Professor of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen).
