The position will be supervised by Associate Professor Tuula Jyske (Forest sciences), at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.
\n\n\n
The D2V project aims to develop a sustainable value chain from wood-based side streams to value-added bio-based products, such as dispersants, wood adhesives, binders and coatings, thermoplastic biocomposites, and fibre-based insulation materials through an efficient and integrated biorefinery approach. The targets of D2V are multiple and interlinked with parallel research sub-projects of the consortium partners. The main target of D2V is to facilitate the transition of Finnish biorefinery from a bioeconomy to a sustainable circular bioeconomy by upgrading industrial waste streams – mainly wood dust. In the tasks of the PhD position, the focus is in developing proof-of-concepts to fully utilize residual extracted and non-extracted dust particles for construction materials. The aim is to unleash the advantages of chemical and structural properties of dust via examining stepwise extraction kinetics to isolate extractives and water-soluble carbohydrates from lignocellulosic fibrous parts. The suitability of differently extracted fibrous fractions will be determined as raw materials for insulation boards and sheets. The goal is to study the performance of wood dust and fibre residues after each extraction in different insulation material applications (acoustic and thermal insulation) while mixed with different (biobased) binders, and fibres from other biomass sources. Also, the possibilities to enhance material performance properties with bioinspired engineering approaches will be assessed, such as knowledge on bioacoustics.
\n\n\n
Doctoral researcher: We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled researcher with a Master’s degree and experience in material science, chemistry, or related field.
\n\n\n
A successful candidate should be able to:
\n\n\n
\n
Identify, design, conduct, and report research within the scope of the project.
\n
Contribute to undergraduate student supervision and teaching within the department.
\n
Engage with the scientific community, research partners and the wider public, internationally and domestically through scientific publications, conference presentations, press releases, blogs etc.
\n
\n\n\n
The candidate is expected to have:
\n\n\n
Education, experience and technical skills
\n\n\n
\n
A relevant Master’s degree including experience in material science and/or chemistry.
\n
Fluency in English and excellent writing skills.
\n
Experience in working with biomass-based materials.
\n
\n\n\n
Personal attributes and competencies
\n\n\n
\n
Interest in basic and applied science.
\n
Excellent analytical and innovative research planning skills.
\n
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experienced in working within multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
\n
High motivation for academic research, having initiative and capable of working independently as well as in team environments.
\n
Values continuous improvement based on constructive evaluation, self-reflection and learning.
\n
\n\n\n
The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment.
