The project is implemented by Lahti-Lappeenranta University of Technology (consortium leader), University of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland, University of Tampere and Institute for Economic Research. The position will be supervised by Associate Professor Mirja Mikkilä (Forest sciences), Post doctoral researcher Jenni Miettinen (Economics and Management) and Prof. emer. Markku Ollikainen (Economics and Management) at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">PHOENIX-consortium seeks to assess how the benefits and costs of the energy system are distributed in Finland and design solutions, actions and policies that would support a more equitable distribution. PHOENIX addresses resiliency of the energy system and the sectors of the society impacted by the green energy transition, such as manufacturing, rural areas, and energy end users. It explores new energy solutions that strengthen resiliency.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">Within the sub-project of the University of Helsinki the open vacancy focuses on the net positive forest industry. Net positive industry refers to industrial operations that are more positive than negative overall, and especially regarding the relationship between the industry and environment. The appointee’s main task is to examine the ability of the forest industry, one of the main manufacturing sectors in Finland, to adapt to the green transition. The forest industry has two key environmental challenges: climate and biodiversity impacts of its wood use and energy inputs reliant on wood-based side streams. The appointee is expected to be able to conduct economic analysis of the adapting sector including empirical analysis using economic optimization models.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>Doctoral researcher</b>: We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled researcher with a Master’s degree and experience in economics, environmental economics, forest economics, natural resource economics, or related field.</p>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><strong> A successful candidate should be able to:</strong></p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Identify, design, conduct, analyze and report research within the scope of the project.</li>\n<li>Contribute to undergraduate student supervision and teaching within the department.</li>\n<li>Engage with the scientific community, research partners and the wider public, internationally and domestically through scientific publications, conference presentations, press releases, blogs etc.</li>\n</ul>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The candidate is expected to have the following <b>educational and technical skills, and experiences:</b></p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A relevant Master’s degree including experience in economics, environmental economics, forest economics, or natural resource economics.</li>\n<li>Fluency in English and excellent writing skills.</li>\n<li>Interest towards both theoretical and numerical economic modelling of the pulp and paper industry.</li>\n<li>Programming skills (e.g. Matlab) are considered as an advantage.</li>\n</ul>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\"><b>Personal attributes and competencies</b></p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Interest in basic and applied science.</li>\n<li>Excellent analytical and innovative research planning skills.</li>\n<li>Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experienced in working within multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.</li>\n<li>High motivation for academic research, having initiative and capable of working independently as well as in team environments.</li>\n<li>Values continuous improvement based on constructive evaluation, self-reflection and learning.</li>\n</ul>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: san-serif;\">The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment.
